Romney's latest flip flop ......again ... Vietnam
« on: June 06, 2012, 03:18:44 PM »
As a Massachusetts Senate candidate in 1994, Romney told The Boston Herald, “I was not planning on signing up for the military.” “It was not my desire to go off and serve in Vietnam, but nor did I take any actions to remove myself from the pool of young men who were eligible for the draft,” Romney told the newspaper.

As a presidential candidate in 2007, Romney told The Boston Globe he was frustrated, as a Mormon missionary, not to be fighting alongside his countrymen. “I longed in many respects to actually be in Vietnam and be representing our country there, and in some ways it was frustrating not to feel like I was there as part of the troops that were fighting in Vietnam.”

aside from the 180 degree flip flop between the two statements , to also state he did not take any actions to remove himself from the pool is bunk and an all out lie.

According to Selective Service records. He received his first deferment for “activity in study” in October 1965 while at Stanford. After his first year at Stanford, Romney qualified for a second 4-D deferment status as “a minister of religion or divinity student.”  He was granted the deferment even as some young Mormon men elsewhere were denied that same status. His extended 31-month religious deferment (much longer than the majority of other mormons missionary work) expired in early 1969. Instead of the serving,  he then sought and received another academic studies deferment for much of the next two years.

Mitt ,

Do us all a favor and just state I didn't want to go. But don't lie to us in 2007 that you longed to serve when you are already on record in 1994 stating you didn't want to go,  and then sought multiple deferments to avoid. America forgives a lot of things ,  but one thing they don't like is liars, Nixon should have taught you that. and especially with regards to military service or non service records or intentions.

Awh, the ole "what did he do in Vietnam routine" again, who cares & what hipocritical crap. As thou Libs wanted to go & let me see here, what would obama have done during that period if old enough & please remind me of his service?  ::)

Were you worried about what Clinton did during the Vietnam era when he was running for President, we both know that answer don't we? ::)

I am not a Romney fan, but this is silly

Not silly at all ,
I have no respect for someone who changes their stories on a dime, and lies when it suits them politically depending on what audience they are speaking too. It boils down to integrity and morality.. The man has neither. To many flip flops ... this one was just the latest in a long line of previous.

Then: 'It was not my desire to go off and serve in Vietnam.'  Now: 'I longed in many respects to actually be in Vietnam and be representing our country there.'
Then : 'I saw my father march with Martin Luther King.'
Now: 'I did not see it with my own eyes.'

Then: 'I like mandates. The mandates work.'  Now: 'I think it's unconstitutional on the 10th Amendment front.

Then: 'I respect and will protect a woman's right to choose.'  Now: 'I never really called myself pro-choice.'

Then:  'I will work and fight for stem cell research.'  Now: 'In the end, I became persuaded that the stem-cell debate was grounded in a false premise.'

Then: 'I think the minimum wage ought to keep pace with inflation.'  Now: 'There's no question raising the minimum wage excessively causes a loss of jobs.'

Then: 'I believe that since Roe v. Wade has been the law for 20 years we should sustain and support it.'
Now: 'Roe v. Wade has gone too far.'

Then: ' Illegal immigrants should have a chance to obtain citizenship'
Now: ' 'secure the border, employment verification and no special pathway to citizenship'.

Then: 'If Massachusetts succeeds in implementing it, then that will be a model for the nation.'
'Now: What works in one state may not be the answer for another'

Then: I believe the world is getting warmer, and I believe that humans have contributed to that.'Now: 'My view is that we don't know what's causing climate change on this planet.'

Then: The TARP program... was nevertheless necessary to keep banks from collapsing in a cascade of failures.'
Now : 'When government is... bailing out banks... we have every good reason to be alarmed.'Then: 'I'm not in favor of privatizing Social Security or making cuts.'
'Now: Social Security's the easiest and that's because you can give people a personal account.'

Then: I don't line up with the NRA.'
Now: 'I'm a member of the [NRA].'

I could go on with dozens more , but why bother.

Were you equally upset about Bill"s position at that time & lying about it. Actually, I don't care about either one, but again I would bet you weren't worried about Bill or obama's disdain for the Military in general.

Conservatives have given much criticism over the years to Clinton and Obama over this same issue (myself included). I would like to think these same conservatives will give as much criticism to Romney for doing the same thing but I have a strong feeling they will ignore this issue just like they ignore Romney's record on gun control, abortion, health care, etc.

I think there should be a requirement that one first serve in the armed forces before they are eligible to be commander an chief of the armed forces. This goes for the Clintons and Obamas as well as the Romneys

I was going to school during the Viet Nam era. Yes, us college students were trying to get draft deferments in order to get our degrees. During the same period, thousands of liberal cowards were fleeing to Canada because they didn't have the gonads to serve their country. These same liberals were in full support of Viet Nam (Hanoi Jane was the most active traitor). These same libs were rioting in the streets and spitting on those in uniform. I ended serving after I got my degree but, because of timing and the year they were involved, many with deferments ultimately didn't have to serve. Unfortunately, peanut brain Carter, pardoned all these cowards who fled to Canada.  The Viet Nam vets were the only vets in our history that the people of the US turned their backs on. A wound we will take to our graves.

Romney has proven to me to be a man of immoral character.

Lakota, My family has a long history of military service. We have had at least one family member ,(usually more) who have served in every US war , and we have had representation in every branch of service including myself at one point or another from WW1 up to present. I do not know about civil war or before as I have not been able to trace family roots all the way back yet, but there were a lot of Green mountain boys who did serve i revolutionary, war of 1812, Civil , and Spanish - American, so it's quite likely I will uncover some family members who served prior to WW1 as well. .

I do know we are of Acadian ancestry and were part of Great expulsion of 1755–1763 when my ancestors were booted out of Nova Scotia and took up residence in US.

I agree with your comment.

I did serve during the Vietnam era, but not in Vietnam.  I thought the Vietnam war was worse than stupid; it was insane.  I cannot be critical of anyone who didn't want to get involved in that mess.  However, once our bases were attacted over there, we should have taken Noth Vietnam off the map.

As far as Romney flopping around on the issue, he's probably not the only person to change their mind a few times on it.  The more important fact is that Romney is not Obama and along with that, he to my knowledge is not a communist.  Obama is a communist, a liar and a hardline zealot idealist who would take this country down.  That is all anyone should have to know about the upcoming Presidential election.

BS to the max on all of that but double-BS on the "take this country down." All he had to do was nothing when he took office, and this country would have gone down--would have finished going down, that is.  Obviously you were in a coma the latter half of 2008.

Obama is a liar, on record, and a divider of Americans.  I wish the hell he would have done nothing when he got into office, things would be much better.

Obviously your still in a coma...as I remember it Democrats controlled ALL of congress around 2007....with the added pleasure of having the republicans vote WITH them.  Appears to me like the party you supported crashed everything pretty good.  And I still say there is no reason for you to not like Bush...he signed everything YOUR people laid on his desk....or were you in a coma then too?  Did you have any idea at all even who was in congress?  Or who is there now?  Obviously not.
The Dems don't even like Obama...he is a liability to them, heck the Dems laughed his budget right off the floor...99-zip...then Obama the liar got on TV and told us the reps stood in the way. You obviously believe that...cause maybe you don't know who is in the Senate or who votes for what.
The way congress votes and who is in charge in any certain year is available Junior.  No excuse for not knowing anything.

First, I am an older man now.  I have changed my mind on a lot of things from my youth.  Romney could do also.  A lot of time goes by and you become wiser.  Most don't do the stupid things they did as teens or young adults anymore at 50-60 years old.   I was a 4-F during Vietnam because of medical reasons, but would have served but only after going to officers school.

Second, If Bush OR Obama did nothing.  The big companies would just have to file bankrupcy like any other company.  Obama bailed out GM and Chrysler only to save the unions pensions.  Bankrupcy might have cut them way back to reasonable levels or the company would have to restructure by selling off their unneeded assets like foreign owned car companies.  Nothing is too big to fail.  Now we have to pay for GM and Chrysler out of our pockets.  Same with the big banks.  Why do I have to pay for them and not own part of them.

First thing Obama did when taking office was not ask for another bail out but push the stupid health care bill through that noone knew anything about and will cost the US $1 trillion a year to operate.  Second he had a $700 billion bailout but it wasn't for shovel ready jobs, but for the Democrat ran cities and states to bail our their unions pensions, etc.  Didn't create any jobs with the money.  First thing he should have done is work on the economy, but no, he worked on an expensive unwanted health care bill.

We should have had NO bailouts, and NO health care bill, but if he wanted shovel ready jobs, he should have specified some type of government jobs program like widening the interstate highway system, rebuilding bridges, etc.  Not bailouts of banks, GM, Chrysler, and cities and states that were in financial trouble.

He could have allowed more drilling, pipeline construction, etc. that would have actually created real jobs.

Clinton was a much better president that Obama and he was a sleeze ball, but he knew how to compromise and move to the middle to get things done.  Obama has stayed on the far left and hasn't budged.

Romney will be more apt to compromise or listen to all to do what the majority of Americans want, because he is a politician and not a narcissistic socialist, who doesn't listen to anyone on the "CUT THE BUDGET SIDE"  Every budget Obama submitted has been voted down 90 something to zero.  He isn't a pragmatist or realist.  He is far to left wing idealist to budge and realise there will have to be cuts along with tax adjustments.

Serving in our military might be a credible requisite for becoming the Commander in Chief, but I consider that Jimma Carter served in the Navy and John Efffing Kerry (Vietnam hero) served in the military.  Sadly, Carter was Commander in Chief--Happily, Kerry never was.  The point is that serving in the military doesn't guarantee anything.

What this country needs right now is someone who understands economics.  I hope Romney is that guy.  The one thing we know for sure is that the blight who is the CIC right now is not the guy.

I find it hard to believe these anti Romney comments are on a gun forum.

Then you must have a very short memory. Go back in your mind to the days when O'romeny was governor of Mass.....And signed a "permanant assault weapons ban" into law, saying something to the affect that "these weapons are made for killing people and have no reason to be in citizens hands" (paraphrased)

That along with his signing a socialist type health care bill into law, and supporting the killing of unborn babies.....and his draft dodging years, make it hard for some people to support him, or even tell the difference between him and his darker brother.

FLIP.........Flop......

Re: Romney's latest flip flop ......again ... Vietnam

Twin sons .. different mothers , Romney is no better.

Still shilling for the Obummer I see !  While you point a finger at Romney there are 3 fingers pointing back at an Obama supporter..
So why didn't obama serve ?  The military has been taking qualified enlistees continuously, they didn't quit once the draft was dropped......   SO WHY DIDN'T OBUMMER SERVE ?

With Walkers win , Wisconsinites spoke. my viewpoint on walker was not that of the majority . It's amazing what Citizens United ruling was able to accomplish. They decided to keep corpo puppet boy (R-koch) in office. Their choice, they now must live with their decision. That's the wonderful thing about democracy. my only comment is  you lay down with dogs , you wake up with fleas.

now Back on topic .

Still shilling for the Obummer I see ! Nope never have been, IF I have been shilling for anyone , I guess I can be accused of shilling for Ron Paul. While you point a finger at Romney there are 3 fingers pointing back at an Obama supporter.. How can you even make a distinction between the two? personally it hard to see a difference.

So why didn't obama serve ?  Who knows , ask him, what I do know is Romney was of eligible age during Vietnam , yet yet chose to sit it out through papa pulling strings and a long line of deferments. Obama was still in elementary school at the time so he probably didnt meet the height or age requirements. The military has been taking qualified enlistees continuously, they didn't quit once the draft was dropped......   SO WHY DIDN'T OBUMMER SERVE ? don't have a clue , as I agreed with Lakota if I written the eligibility requirements for COMMANDER AND CHIEF, military service would have been one of them . which by the way RP has. active duty flight surgeon from 1963-65
