Gander Mountain has been getting many telephone calls and emails from gun control activists in Wisconsin for them to evict the NRA from their stores. Gander Mountain has done so.

Wow, I guess I should contact Gander Mtn. Corporate before I contact GM in Little Rock & Texarkana. Thanks for the info.

I researched this article, and, strangely enough, there is no mention of GM receiving multiple telephone calls from the anti-gun crowd.   All the news reports say is that GM canceled the events because it was part of the governor recall controversy, and that GM did not want to alienate Democrat or Republican customers.   Makes sense to me to avoid trouble if you want to stay in business.

Also, there is no indication on NRA ILA website that makes this a big deal.

This seems a bit fishy to me, as in a scheme from the left to shut down. Purveyor of guns and ammo.   It seems like gun owners are falling into lockstep according to a possible leftist design.

I also challenge anyone who believes to the contrary to post credible reports listing specific anti-gun groups that contacted GM.

I suspect the shift of the NRA to a Republican organization had something to do with it.  The NRA should rename the *American Rifleman* magazine to the *American Republican Rifleman* magazine.  There's millions of Democratic hunters and gun owners, and the NRA's beat-Obama campaign has POed most of them.

That is why I e-mailed Corporate & will not do anything other than comment on this thread until I get all the facts. We can be patient yet stay on it & the facts will come out. It does seem a little wierd.

A nationwide sporting goods store closed its doors to a pair of politically charged events. A spokesperson with the National Rifle Association said they are up in arms after Gander Mountain canceled workshops at the stores in Rothschild and Eau Claire this week.A politically charged election season is sure to cause some sparks. NRA spokesperson Stephanie Samford said this latest disagreement lit a fire under the group.
"Spirited races tend to bring out the best and worst in people and it's clear that Gander Mountain is hardly the profile of courage," said Samford.
Samford said the NRA planned two grassroots workshops this week at Gander Mountain -- one in Rothschild and the other in Eau Claire. Both would have focused on support for republican Governor Scott Walker. Samford said both wcanceledlled by Gander Mountain.
Newsline 9 tried to contact store leaders -- but after repeated attempts, never heard back. A post on the company's Facebook page said, "As the largest retailer [of] firearms in the country, Gander Mountain is a tireless supporter of the Second Amendment and has been a longtime partner of the NRA. However, the diversity of Gander Mountain customers and their varied interests prompted us recently to settle on a policy prohibiting hosting events on behalf of political causes or candidates."
Governor Walker stopped in Rhinelander on Thursday. He said he hadn't heard about the situation but he appreciates support from the hunting community.
"I just know I'm proud of the fact that law-abiding gun owners in this state, sports men and sports women overwhelmingly involved in groups like the National Rifle Association have strongly endorsed our campaign because of the good work we've done," said Walker.
Some in the community said this issue came up because of a series of complaints. Area democrats said they don't blame the business. Saying it's just that -- a business decision.
"I think they're listening to their customers and that's what good businesses do," said Marathon County democratic party chair Jeff Johnson. "In this case, there are democrats that hunt and there are republicans that hunt and that shop at Gander Mountain."
Samford said the NRA has held a number of events at Gander Mountain in the past -- at locations across the country. This week's events still went on -- but at different location. Tuesday's event was held at Cimino's Gun Archer inerin in Merrill. Wednesday's event was at the Plaza Hotel and Suites in Eau Claire. http://www.waow.com/story/18509220/nra-events-supporting-gov-walker-cancelled-at-gander-mountain

I'm totally baffled. I just don't understand. They have convinced "the largest retailer of firearms in the country" to reject the NRA. GM thinks they can have their cake and eat it too. I smell a rat.

The bottom line for me is I support those who support my/our firearms rights. I do my best NOT to support those who should seek to remove those rights.

I have disassociated myself with anything Gander Mountain. I just today removed myself from there mailing and email lists and explained to them exactly why.

why anyone would buy a firearm from them is beyond me. The store by me the salesmen are uninformed and they stand around talking to their buddys rather than waiting on customers. The prices are either the MSRP or above the MSRP. I looked at a S/S CZ and they wanted $200 more than the MSRP!!! When I asked the manager why was that he said "it was a fair price". The ammo prices are out of sight. I get personal and informative service at my local gun store and fair prices.

+1

I see the same thing around here, I stopped shopping at Gander Mountain a long time ago for these very reasons.  They also jacked their primer prices way up during the shortage in the runup to the last presidential election.  Better to spend your money supporting a local gun shop.

Gander Mountain backs away from NRA event for Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker

St. Paul-based Gander Mountain had planned to host workshops in connection with the meetings at its stores in Rothschild and Eau Claire, Wis., WAOW-TV reported. When the company withdrew, the NRA moved the meetings to other locations.

Don't have any Gander Mountains here in Arizona, but have visited a few when I was working in Minnesota. That's ok. Now the press and the gov't beaurocrats are trying to blame all the wildfires out west on guns and shooters.

Do we absolutely know for sure if the antis are truly behind this scheme, or did Gander Mountain just decide to back out because it was part of the Walk recall campaign?

Has anyone heard from Gander Mountain corporate management?

I agree with SwampThing762, we should check out the facts first.  Years ago, GM employees told me that they wouldn't sell black rifles because management said that they weren't politically correct.

Guess what, they have been selling black rifles for quite some time now.  Instead of boycotting GM like some of you recommend, we should be calling GM and bombarding them with request that they support the NRA.  BTW, they still have NRA membership forms prominently displayed in in their stores.

As far as prices are concerned, shop where it is most beneficial to your wallet.

After reading all this, I find that "tobster" seems to have the most relevant facts concerning a boycott of GM. They have indeed topped out here in Sherman Texas as THE MOST EXPENSIVE GUN STORE IN TOWN.
Now that has already caused me to pretty much boycott them. ;)

Gander Mountain posted via their Facebook page after hundreds of former customers complained on it.  Their excuse was that they didn't realize that it was a political event, though how they couldn't have known that given that we are talking about the NRA/ILA is beyond me.

Gander Mountain has been known in the past for being clost gun control advocates.  For a long time, they wouldn't sell handguns with barrels less than 4" long, as they had no "Sporting" purpose.  as concealed carry became a money maker, they reversed that policy.  Same with modern sporting rifles.

Finally their best form is their prices, which are ridiculous.

Ain't that the truth. I have walked out of a GM store near me wondering how they ever sell any guns. Haven't been back to it in years. Most likely never will be.

Gander Mountain's self important know it all employees do a good job of keeping me away. There was a guy that me and my buddy refer to as "the aluminum bullet guy" He lectured us for buying a box of cast bullets. "Those aluminum bullets will ruin your barrel!"  Then there was a jerk who tried to lecture me because I hunt with a recurve bow: "Recurve bows are toys. You shouldnt hunt with them. I went to the GM in Paducah KY a couple weeks ago.  Not only did they not have what I needed but the things I was browsing for seemed insanely expensive.  I don't expect to see that store in operation for very much longer.
