Kodiak project
« on: June 09, 2012, 10:43:51 AM »

I got this Kodiak 58 double rifle on this forum a couple of months ago. I decided it was butt ugly. Lightly colored wood, brown barrels, furniture in white, ugh. Now, dark wood and all the metal in dark rust blue. I like it now.  Too pretty to shoot?

Thanks bubba. I put this on that 'other forum' also. Working with this very early Pedersoli , you appreciate the superior quality of the T/C. The newer Pedersoli and Lyman are a bit improved, but T/C is still the best production gun.

Two shots! I am officially dangerous.                               P.A.

I assume it was the original finish when I got it. When I stripped it what little color it had came off. What I had looked like a not very good piece of birch. I have seen better wood on a packing crate. Once it was stripped and cleaned and allowed to dry, I applied a stain that is a mix of 'gun stock' and  'espresso' .  I had to use a dark stain to cover the ugly wood. Allowed to dry , then three applications of Tru-oil. This could be waxed but I like the flatish finish that is consistant with a real hunter.

Thanks for the kind comments,  P.A.

I use Tasco epoxy paint remover. Wear gloves. Apply with a brush allow to bubble then scrape. Work quickly, if allowed to set up, it can be difficult to remove. Flush with water. Inspect for small patchs of remaining finish. I scrape them off with a dull knife. At this point the stain in the wood may be washed out using Arm&Hammer soap. I have not done this because I wanted a darker finish. This stuff has removed every finish I used it on.

New to this forum but been muzzleloading since 1964.
I have some experience with the double rifles and don't be disappointed if it's not a tack driver. If you don't have an owner's manual try to find a copy online and it will tell you that the barrels were regulated to converge around 90 to 100 yds. and you will need to use a lot of Kentucky windage.
Don't get discouraged but don't start out shooting at pie plates better to start with a 4'X4' sheet of plywood.

Owners manual that comes with these leaves out the regulation load and distance to convergence.  For instance mine came with a 1:32 twist barrels but the suggested load is 50 grains of 2F with patched roundball.  Accuracy was dismal, and power below par.  Switching to Hornady great plains bullet (400 + grain weight) and 85 grains of 2F brought it into regulation at 75 yards, with a 3 x 3 group measuring 3" vertical and 2" horizontal from the standing off hand position.

Oh Welcome to the group!! fired my first muzzleloader in '76

My gunsmith that did the blue on this has built several africa-style double rifles. He impressed on me that double rifles are a special type of gun. If not constructed correctly or damaged they become real pretty junk. As soon as I can get some shootin in, I will start at about 25 yards and work out. With a 1:32 twist, poor PRB performance is no surprise. The bores on this one appear to be slower[?]. I will start with balls over a bit more powder. It stands to reason that the bullets regulate best.
