Very Disappointed in TC
« on: June 10, 2012, 02:23:52 AM »
I finally got my TC Prohunter in. I put a Hawk 4-12 on top and took it to the range. To start off the trigger is horrible it is probably close to 7 pounds, So i started out at 50 yards besides the horrible trigger it shot pretty good. The best load I found was 100 grains of 777 and a 250 grain bonded ShockWave, they grouped about 1.5 inches at 50 yards. So the next weekend rolls around and I stretch the distance out to 100 yards to sight the gun in. The first shot was high and left so I loaded up again and it printed the second shot about 2 inches higher so I load up again for the third time and I didn't even hit paper? This happend with a couple diffrent loads. What could the problem be?

Too much scope.  Too much powder.  Try 80 grains....Swab between shots.

Do some trigger work put a Bergara barrel on it and you will have bug hole groups with a 250 to 300 gr bullets with 90 to 110 of T7 or BH209 and you'll be very happy.

one thing for sure. you need to get that trigger fixed.

I'd have to say that either the scope is going bad OR its something as simple as the rings/mounts working loose.

Your powder charge/bullet combo is pretty much standard  with tc and so i believe you are fine on that area

Now are you swabbing between shots with that t7 or just forcing the bullet though the crud build up in the bore?

Encore barrels fit Pro hunter frames and the reverse and Bergara makes them for the encore and both my Accura and Apex 50cal MLs shine with a 110gr of Bh209 and 300gr bullets.

Not too heavy, just to heavy to shoot good groups.

even after all this time, some ppl just do not get it yet.  Go to the bergara barrel.  I would also check the forend screws and make sure you are resting it the same on whatever rest you are using.

every barrel has its own likes and dislikes. get a trigger job first then go to the range and start at 80/90 grains and work up are down till you find the sweet spot.might even try differant bullets

fwiw I have owned several encore and bergara barrels, and I have never had a t/c barrel come close to a bergara barrel for accuracy.  I have shot heavy loads in all including centerfire barrels, which would blow up long before a ml barrel given the differences in pressures.  Get the bergara barrel and never look back.

BackOnTopic- MY Omega shoots its best groups with 120 grains 777 and 300 grain Hornady SST's.  But I do clean out the barrel between every shot.

D't be disapointed try a differant bullet and start with a lighter powder charge,my encore barrel wil shoot one hole at 50 yards with first loads I used, but I'm using black powder not that other stuff,I won't use it,and try the saboted bullets, the encore barrel is as good as any.

I liked 777 & 90 gr was the best, like black horn better but 90gr was still the best.  300 gr bullets. Every gun is different & half the fun is experimenting. Mike

Fix or get the trigger fixed. How you can get a group when the trigger is so stiff you need a hammer to pound it back enough to fire is beyond me.
Once the trigger is taken care of try again starting at 70 to 80 grains of T7. Then up the grains by 5 grain incerments.
If that fails try different bullets and sabots, One of mine will not shoot a harvestor sabot with a 300 gold dot worth beans but use MMP sabots and it will drive tacks. I would get rid of the rifle before I spent money on a new barrel. to many us the T/C barrels with good results. there are many other rifles on the market you do not need a new barrel to get to shoot either.

I shoot 95gr of t7 with 240 xtp bullets and harvester sabots. I also swab between shots. If I do my part it will shoot under a inch all day.

The biggest thing I have found is to swab between shots.Do the same thing every time, swabbing, seating the bullet.

Your load isn't the problem at all.

I have no problems with my factory Thompson Center standard 26" 209x50 barrel with dual dovetailed Leupold base and medium rings with a Leupold Vari-X II 3-9x40mm scope which gives me excellent accuracy and zero fliers. I use 100 grains of Hodgdons pyrodex or 777 powder with a sabot and simple jacketed or lead pistol bullets. This rifle wears  factory Thompson Center synthetic stock and forend.

I feel its most likely your scope, or possibly the mount and rings or all.

I would be careful about your trigger and contact only T/C for a proper adjustment.

Reduce that load and your accuracy will be even better.
