I think I've found it!!!!!!!
« on: June 11, 2012, 09:24:53 AM »
I have posted here about my Type 38 Arisaka. It is rebarreled in 260 Rem., Has a Timney side safety trigger set at 3 lbs. with a birds eye maple manlicher stock.
The gun is very accurate and has become my favorite deer rifle hands down. It's only flaw is that it is a litttle hard to close. You have to overcome the firing pin spring to close the bolt.
The other day someone replyed to a post I made a few months back on another site and is sending me the information I needed. Brownell's Gunsmith Kinks 4 Page 334 gives the details on how to convert an Arisaka to cock on open. I can hardly wait to get this done and I will have the Perfect deer rifle.
I know there are a few of you that shoot the old Japs. too and might like this.

Converting cock on closing action to cock on opening has some dangers. The portion of the bolt altered is usually not entirely suitable and you generally get one chance to get it right. Also leaving it cocliked much by American shooters but it is a good system. k on close divides the force needed to operate the action into 2 parts, extraction/ejection and loading a fresh round/cocking the striker. It is not a system most americans like but it works well. That said I've converted several small ring mausers and a few american enfields to cock on opening and they're working quite well still.. Keep us up on your progress..thanks.
