2012 Deer Hunting-What will you use?
« on: June 13, 2012, 12:19:45 AM »
Its been unusually cold and rainy around here lately.  Got me thinking about autumn.  So here is the question- What rifle, cartridge, and bullet will you be using for deer hunting this fall?

I have a VZ24 Mauser in 264 win mag that shoots 140 gr Speer grandslams, it hasn't killed anything in my hands yet.  Or my trusty ole Rem 700 in 338-06AI with 200 gr Hornadys.

What will YOU use?

and maybe a spear.

Living in central New York means hunting in a region fragmented between shotgun only areas and areas where you can use a rifle.

Given the cycle of seasons I'll start with a Bowtech Commander shooting Easton Axis Slim-tech carbon arrows and Montec G5 tips, switch to either a Savage 220 slug rifle with 3" Federal/Barnes tipped 5/8 oz Expanders or a .308 CZ 550 full stocked rifle with 165 grain Sierra GameKings during the regular season and finish with a Savage 10ML-11 shooting either 300 grain XTPs or 300 grain Barnes Originals in the late archery/muzzleloader season.

Deer are plentiful here and I usually fill about four tags.

I gotta say, i'm a little bit jealous.  We get one deer tag here in Idaho.  There are a few areas where a person can put in for extra doe tags, kind of a depredation type hunt.

Gave my Marlin 336 to my grandson last fall...so for deer/bear season, I'll likely use my H&R  ultra light  .243 Win with either of 2 bullets ..Nosler partitions or Hornady interlocks @ about 2850 fps.

I've got a bunch of Handi rifles I haven't killed a deer with yet.  Lessee here...  :-\   Off the top a my head there's the 45 Colt, 280, 444, 500 S&W, and 7x57.  I'm sure there are others I forgot...  :-[

We have a 12 deer limit and a 3 month season; not counting BP and Bow!   ;D   But our deer are small.   ;)

I'll start with an old Brown Bear compound bow and finish up with a Savage 10ML this year.

How many would it take to fill a big chest freezer down there?  I think about 4 would do it here...

20" 45 LC Encore. Put it together last year and fell in love with it. Shoots hot 240 and 250 gr XTP's extremely well.

Most likely, i'll be using my "go to gun", chambered in 8x57jrs, at least for the first day or two,

I've hammered some big bucks with it, includeing this one last fall,

After i put a buck in the freezer, i will probably switch to my 700 Remington chambered in .240 Weatherby, as i can harvest 5 does a day here on my property and i always shoot a couple to get rest of the meat i need...

Thanks for the pictures from those who posted them.  Looking at some of the responses here got me to thinking i'll probably pack around my Super Blackhawk 4 5/8 and hope a shot presents itself.  Never killed anything with a handgun, I'll bet its a lot of fun.  i have a box of Hornady 265 grain slugs that oughtta do the trick.

  Hello To all,

Just mounted an old redfield "wideview" 2x7 scope on my yugo48 actioned .257 roberts, hopefully I'll get a chance to sight it in tomorrow, Utah just sent results for their hunts last couple weeks, and posted available antlerless seasons and tags, so I've been thinking about deer season the last few days too.

I've got a superb load for my remington 700 classic roberts, a speer hot core 120 grain boattail, pushed by AA4350, it should preform well in the yugo as well ( I hope).

I will be using my Bushmaster AR15 chambered in 6.8 SPC launching 130 grain Ballistic Tips. For the muzzle loader season it will be my Savage
Model 10 smokeless launching 250 grain XTP's and topped with a 4x.  Burris.

Ill probably use my Papa's Remington 721 in 270 Winchester loaded with a 130 grain Nosler Accubond. I'm hoping to use that to take my first deer mainly because it was my grandfather's. If I get another opportunity at one after that I'll use my Ruger 77 Hawkeye in 270 Winchester. If I have the opportunity to work up some handloads for it I will probably load it with a 130 grain Nosler Partition.

;) For deer hunting here in Wy. I have three tags...for a whitetail doe, what ever I happen to have when I runon to whitetails...most likely my new .243 or a 7mm-08.. for mulies, it will be my 26 inch barreled .270 along with a heavy barreled .300...for my prairie whitetail tag, most likely the same pair as I mulie hunt with..but I may take my 243 also..We will hunt with relatives on the east coast, there I plan to use the 7mm-08, that is why I barreled it up...But I will also take my heavy barreled .300 because my favorite stand offers a mountain side that deer cross any where from 100 to 500 yards...the shot is always standing, but the distance varies, and the cover is heavy once they cross the mt...plus other hunters are in the area and a buck not hit hard will be taken by someone else...if I have doe tags on the coast, it will be the 7mm-08....last year got my buck the last evening of season with a .2506 and 115 grain Nosler BTBT at about 350 yards...

:)  Howdy: Parker bow for archery; 50 caliber ML, .243 rifle, and 336c 30-30. Sometimes archery season is just too hot for hunting here in East Central Texas. Maybe we will have some cool mornings and afternoons. Good Hunting to all!  Always, Gene

Hunt the Hoosier State. We can take a bunch of deer in a season. One buck in most cases, but you can be drawn for state park reduction hunts or hunt urban zones for additional bucks. Does are pretty much limitless as long as you hop from county to county and take the max antlerless limit per county, and can find land to hunt. That said I'll start with my trusty PSE Brute bow in October and work through may handis in 357 max, 44 mag, 500 S&W, all with worked up deer buster handloads in November. We are very restricted with our rifle calibers that we can use in Indiana, and then I will sprinkle in some time with my 410 and 12 guages. I'll end with my muzzleloader using a Wally World special CVA wolf in December. All but the handi rifles have take multiple deer over the years. I put them together this year just for deer hunting.

Good luck to all this year and be safe out there!

Will start hunting with trail cameras, then switch to a High Country 4 runner bow till gun season starts. Then i've got 2 choices for hunting behind my house, my reliable mossburg 695 12ga, and my untried .50 Dragonslayer air rifle. Not sure about that one yet, kinda weak. Finally, for some late season South Carolina lowcountry hunts, a Savage Axis .308. Between all of em, something will work.  J

Well let`s see now!
I could use the Marlin 30-30 Lever, Model 7400 Rem 30-06, Win Mod 70 ( Pre 64) 30-06, Rem mod 600 .308Win, Handi 45-70 , Encore Rifle .270, Rem Mod 700 -6MM, Marlin levers in .444 Marlin or 45-70, or my little .35 Rem in Contender carbine! As the OP stated rifles and cartridges I want go into muzzleloaders or shotguns. Whoops! Almost skipped one and that is my Encore 30-06 with Pro Hunter barrel! Probably as my old body can still get up in a stand, I might just hunt on the ground with either the .35 Rem or set up on a large rightaway with the Encore 30-06 or .270!!
