In my reply #5 I spoke of the need to go to my H&R .243 Win....because I gave my 336.. 30/30 to my grandson.  I may occasionally use the H&R, but I did go out and buy a new Ruger American in .308 Win.  I'll be getting a new K-4 Weaver Classic scope for it.
I decided to go with the K-4 primarily for it's simplicity..less moving parts, less to go wrong.  Plus Weaver with their K-4, has had many decades to figure things out.
In in the woods and hils where I hunt, ranges are not extreme, so a 4X shouls work fine..it does on some of my other rifles.

I will be using a Ruger #1B in .264 win mag that I just purchased new this year.I have already reloaded some 140 gr Noslers for it and have shot 1/4 inch groups.
I usually try and use a different caliber each year, just to keep it interesting.

Bighorn custom recurve, then Marlin 1894C .357 magnum, my only lever gun I've not yet killed a deer with.  After that maybe another lever gun.  May use my Ruger M77 6mm for the first time in several years since I became attached to my Marlins.  May even work in the Ruger Super Blackhawk a time or two.

Well, since (a) I've had exactly zero time to work up loads for all the unblooded Handi's I included in my previous list, and (b) I lost most of the sight in my right eye, I've modified that list a bit.  This year will be limited to my 50-140 Handi, the 45 Colt Handi and a Ruger 44 mag. SBH Hunter.

For the rifle seasons a CMMG AR 15 in 6.8 Rem. and for muzzle loading season a scoped Ruger Super Redhawk in .44 Mag. (New rule in Missouri allows centerfire handguns during ML season.).

Its been unusually cold and rainy around here lately.

I have a VZ24 Mauser in 264 win mag that shoots 140 gr Speer grandslams, it hasn't killed anything in my hands yet.  Or my trusty ole Rem 700 in 338-06AI with 200 gr Hornadys.

What will YOU use?

It hasn't been cold here, actually the opposite. I mean to tell you we have 'skeeters here at the end of Sept. IN NOVA SCOTIA !! >:( >:( It is wet, real wet, reminds me of certain places in the Northwest.

OK ,'nuff about the weather. Unless you have a new specie of giant deer( huge moose)  I would say the 264 Win is the one to pick.

I've got just about 4 weeks left before the season opens and am still messing around with three possibilities.

A. 6.5x55 with great shooting loads, it is however the rifle with the largest LOA in a confined stand.

B. 308 Win Savage Axis. Still twiddling around with loads and the trigger is still heavier then I like.

C. 45-70 Handi with a very fine trigger, still playing with cast bullet loads but have a jacket bullet load all figured out.

D. ( I know it is #4) just in case I get fed up with any of the above it will be a Rem 742 in 30-06 with a short barrel.
Ranges will not be over 100 yards, more than likely about half of it.

As I've said already, I'm really looking forward to using my Marlin 1894C with a Skinner peep sight.  I've done some reading about the use of the .357 magnum for taking game.  Soon after the round's development it was used - in a revolver - to take virtually all North American game.  I only want to take a 100 to 150 pound whitetail.  The only real limitation I foresee is that it's hard to see through the aperture in dim light.  Maybe I'll take along my Ruger Super Blackhawk in .44 magnum for those times.  Range won't be a problem; we almost never get a long shot in the thick woods where we hunt.

Is you sixshooter equipped with a scope? If not, I can't see how it would be better than your carbine in low light.

Only saw one BP Revolver ( tacklebury) that might be used for deer hunting! I thought there might be more adventurous souls that might venture out with some of the bigger BP revolvers in search of the wiley whitetail or piggies!!

On Monday 1 Oct, I used a CVA Buckhorn Mag .50 to shoot first buck of the year; small year-old spike. Next morning - yesterday - I went back to get my stand at dawn, sat in it a while. Heard & saw turkeys. About 8:30, as I'm thinking of coming down - I've got to work later - big cowhorn comes by. Shot him at 35yd. Couldn't see where he went through smoke cloud. Walked over there, and found big spray of blood and lung material; he went about 10 yards. perfect. then the work stated.
2012 deer season is off to a rompin' good start!

Yeah Ranger99,
Could you use a bp revolver during the regular gun season?
And yes, don`t get me started on the antler restriction regs of Texas!!
Makes it pretty hard to get a decent herd going with good antler growth if you leave all of those small antlered and sometimes deformed bucks in the herd to breed!   Ask me how I know!!

I'm surprised about Texas.  Back in the late 70's when I was at A & M, you could kill two "forkless spikes along with your normal tag.  A & M will also doing a research project concerning the antler genetics of deer.

the reg. book states that a legal buck must
have at least one unbranched antler, or must
have an inside spread of at least 13 inches or
greater.
don't even get me started on that deal. >:(
no state should be in the trophy raising
business. it should be first and foremost
game resource health, and trophy management
a way distant something.
but the p.t.b. want all the money from folks
coming from all around to take a set of antlers
for the office wall or to post on facebook,
or a big bass for samey-same.
(gotta love those hunting and lunker bass shows)

as far as using bp revolvers, i think they are allowed
for general season use, or for feral hogs anytime.
you just cant be in possession of one during a
muzzleloader-only hunt.  go figure.

I had planned on using a Rossi 7mm-08 which I bought for its light weight, but I also have a bear tag and after seeing the size of some of the local bears I may go with a 7mm magnum.

Here in OH we still cannot use any centerfires for deer except in handguns.  That leaves us with shotguns or muzzleloaders if we want to hunt with a rifle.
Last year I experimented with a 410 pump gun that I fitted with a fully rifled 44 cal. barrel to and was shooting 240 gr. 44 cal. Hornady XTP bullets out of 2 1/2" plastic 410 cases.  With that I took a small buck at close range out of a tree stand and it performed just fine. It has the accuracy and power to be effective to at least 100 yards or more on deer but I never got a longer shot with that combo.
This year I will be hunting with a H & R handi rifle with a 12 ga. barrel that I fitted a rifled 40 cal. barrel liner to. Again it will be loaded with a plastic cased 410 hull loaded with a 287 gr. 40 cal. cast bullet loaded ahead of a healthy dose of rifle powder.  Load testing has proven this can exceed 2000 fps easily with in the pressure that the plastic case will hold up to.  This combo with a scope should be effective to 150 yards plus if needed.
During our muzzleloading season I will be hunting with a handi rifle with a converted 45-70 barrel that is now a 45 cal. smokeless muzzleloader.  I will be shooting the same 287 gr. 40 cal. cast bullet but with a sabot at about the same velocity as the 410 cased rifle . These somewhat unusual guns are legal for Ohios firearm and muzzleloader seasons.
