My first .22Hornet got rechambered to .225Winchester.   It's a screamer of a round.  ..About the same as a .22-250.

I love my re-chambered 225 (was a 223) but I'd do a 219 Zipper man, in a New York minute!  I think the Zipper is such a class round.  You can make brass outa 30-30s too so cheap brass.

The ONLY reason I don't have a 225 is I simply cannot justify it!!!

My vote is for the 225 Winshester!!!!!!!

If it is a 1 - 9" twist, I would do the 225 Winchester with 69 grain bullets or other heavy type. My 1 - 9" Ruger Mini 14 shoots 75 grain Hornady hollow points with no problem. Cases are still available and is definitely different than most people have.

If it is a 1 - 12" twist then I would go with a 221 Fireball or 222 Remington to keep it different, but the 224 GNR is interesting.

If you really want some thing different that can shoot well, (but a pain to make cases) is the 219 Donaldson Wasp

If it is something like a 1:16 twist you will likely be limited to about a 45-50 grain bullet, depending on the projectile length.

Jason, Unfortunately it won't work. H&R chambers their barrels before they weld on the lug. And when they weld on the lug because it is so big they get the barrel red hot and this makes the chamber area hard as a rock. A reamer just spins in it. We have tried several and it just doesn't work. Sorry. Gary Reeder

Im sure Mr. Reeder's reply comes as a surprise to the many who have done just so. One can only speculate as to why he had trouble with several.

I personally would like to have one rechambered for the 25-20. My great grandfather used to shoot crows out of the tree at least 150 yards away with the 25-20......open sights. I believe is was an old Winchester lever action. The distance may seem hard to believe but it is true, so take it for what its worth.

Hope it goes well for you

That makes no sense at all , he did mine and it worked just fine , I even made a point to ask him if the lug was an issue and he said no problem , he'd do it just like he does TC barrels .

Jason

I even managed to find the e-mail that Gary sent me saying that an H&R was no problem .  ???

From:   "Gary /Colleen Reeder" <creeder@infomagic.net>Add sender to Contacts    To:  hammer2000head@yahoo.com       Richard,    The 224 GNR is equal to the 222 but rimmed which is better for revolvers or single shot pistols. I have never heard of the 224 R&C so I don't know about any comparison. I looked it up in Cartridges of the World and it is not listed. No problem rechambering the H&R barrel. The dies are $90. The brass has to be annealed and necked down. If you are familiar with annealing, there is no problem. The rechambering is $100. Gary Reeder

Good Shooting and Good Luck

The 225win doesnt need faster twist rates because of 400-600fps additional velocity over a 223rem.

My Hornet-to-225win has a 1:16" twist and it shoots 69gr just fine.

Ah, yes.......that much velo increase can 'overcome' an otherwise too slow a twist! Glad you bring that up. The more mundane classic cartridges didnt do that, much to the dismay of more than a few shooters.

It sounds to me like Gary Reeder is too busy to mess with any H&R rifle re-chambers or he got to thinking about liability. Another possibility is a couple of customers gave him a lot of grief about some of his work and he decided that it just was not worth the trouble.

Good Luck and Good Shooting

Lets give him the BOTD, he may have been misinformed, and we dont know what kind of trouble he has had. I know from personal experience that 'just' lathe profiling a barrel can hit hard spots that set up chatter, and in a chamber would do the same. A profiling cutter is way cheaper to resharpen/replace than a chamber reamer.
