Shotgun barrel choke add on
« on: June 14, 2012, 02:01:56 PM »
I have a pre 855,000 Ithaca 37 with a 28"mod barrel and I want to put screw in chokes on it. What type of quality  can I expect?
I also have a Browning light 12 with a 26 IC barrel that I would like to replace with a 30" full, according to numeric arms a regular A5 barrel won't work.
Since this was my dad's gun I would prefer to keep it as original as possible.
Anybody out there got any free advice for Me?
Thanks Alan

I really can't comment on the A5 light barrel swap.. I had thought the only difference was lightening cuts in the receiver and thinner barrel walls.. Anyone else have better knowledge in this matter.. As to the M37 question I really don't understand what quality you are asking about...

I was wondering if add on chokes were as solid as the ones that were installed from the fatory. Did anyone know of any preference of choke brand that was "better" that others. Was there any paticular shop that stood out as "best" at this type of work.  Was this a waste of money or did it offer an improvement over the stock barrel.

Not a gunsmith but as I understand it, you need to have the barrel thickness measured to see if there is enought metal where you cut back beyond the existing choke, to ream and tap the inside threads.  I'm guessing you will not, but I honestly do not know.

The remchoke seem to be most common and have been fine as far as durability.. Check the GBO supporter list for installation but I routinely use Mike Orlen.. He can be found   at   http://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/viewforum.php?f=12 ob shotgun world..
