308or 30.06 ???
« on: February 03, 2004, 05:34:03 AM »
New member......I am trying to decide between a 308 or a 30.06 in a 15in barrel for a tc encore..... I will be hunting deer and elk in the west. I will be limiting my shots to the 200 yard  range. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.... tThank You     GLC

No experience to offer to you yet, just got a 15" 30/06 barrel and haven't fired it yet.  I am planning to use it for the same thing you intend, if I decide to put in for the general season hunt rather than the muzzleloader or archery for elk.

I think they would be pretty much the same, with the '06 giving a little more case capacity but cutting down that amount in the length of the rifling.  I only shoot handloads so I am not even considering factory loading.  I have a couple of good service rifle loads that I will try when I get ready to begin my testing.

Given the barrel length about the only advantage the 06 has over the 308 within your range limitations would be the ability to handle heavier bullets. Something that may desireable for elk hunting. I have the 308 barrel and while it does an adequate job on whitetails it has never given me the accuracy I would like. I will not shoot it beyond 150 yards for that reason. Keep in mind it may just be my particular barrel. The 06 may be more of a handfull but I don't consider the 308 to be bad so the 06 should be easily managed.
Just another worthless opinion!!

My personal choice is the .308 in the 15inch barrel.  Especially at the ranges you describe.  Uses less powder for good load density and the difference in volocity is negible.

Good luck with your decision

I recently purchased the 15" .308 barrel myself.  The recoil was stout and accuracy was pretty darn good I thought.  I was able to print 3-shot groups just under 2" at 100 yards.  Mine is wearing a Bushnell Elite 3200 2-6X scope.

I've always been a big fan of the .308.  It is inherently accurate and I don't think you would gain anything with the '06.  Especially in the 15" barrel.  The ONLY advantage I see is that factory ammo is more plentiful in the '06 than the .308 'round here.  But, I reload so that doesn't bother me.

I have shot a number of elk with specialty handguns and I would recommend the 06 over the 308. The 308 will work to the ranges you specified, but I prefer the 30-06/284 Win cases capacity over the 308 case capacity when it comes to elk.

Gcravens,

I don't think there is an ounce of difference between the 308 and 30-06 at 200 yards.  I have a 308 Encore.  Before I got into the 308, I did extensive research on several calibers including the 30-06, 7mm 08 and the 308, as well as many others.  I was really looking for the 7mm-08, but a trade came up and I went with the 308.  I am very pleased with the 308.

All of this data is contained in an Excel Spreadsheet.  If your have either Microsoft Excel or Microsoft Works, send me an email and with which you have.  I will send you a copy of the spreadsheet.

It includes anticipated velocities, 200 yard energy and foot pounds of recoil by the firearm  You might be surprised as some of the findings.

The data was obtained by using Neco Quickload and Sierra Infinity computer software.  Let it be known that every load that I have developed in QuickLoad actually chronographs within 20 fps of the Quickload calculated velocity.

Just a note:  I am right now suffering with the left index finger that the 308 Encore bite yesterday.  It is all blue and very tender.  I have read many times about Graybearders talking about the bite.  Now I know to keep my non shooting hands away from the horn on the trigger guard.

out of the 15 inch tube can you really burn enough of the extra powder to make the 30-06 THAT much better then the 308?

What good is the extra case capacity if you can not burn all the powder?

Either one will due. I have the 30-06 myself and target practice at 200 yards, great round.  :D
