30 30 CFE 223 load with speer 110 gr HP 1835
« on: June 15, 2012, 06:12:28 AM »
Looking for a safe place to start from someone with a bit more experience than this  greenhorn. Not looking to max this out just to start a load for my Savage 24 v and do some plinking/paperpunching and this is what I have to work with.Winchester Large Rifle primers. Lee Classic Loader and patience on my side.  Not a lot of cash, either. Any help appreciated.

Hodgdon  doesn't list CFE223 for bullets that light in the .30-30.  I would call them at 913 362-9455.  I'm sure they would be happy to help you.  I'm eager to try CFE also.

Called Hodgon andthey recommended nothing lighter than 130 in that cal/powder combination as the burn rate is too slow. Could be.  At this point they are smarter than I am on this subject. I'll save the CFE for the moment until I figure out plan b.

Using the Speer #1835 bullet, I'm loading 35.0 grs H335 under it in a 30-30. Seems to be one of those loads that works great in just about anything you stick in. I use the load in rifles and pistols alike and it's extremely accurate. Muzzle blast from a 10" or 14" barrel is extreme and I would suggest not shooting it in dry grass. Otherwise, makes for a real good varmint round from a lever gun. Recoil is next to nothing and is suitable for the very young that want to shoot too.
