Holster options?

Wondering if some of you folks could direct me towards a hunting, bumming around the woods holster? This would be for a 6 1/2 BH.
 
In my vision I see a cross draw type. It would be suitable for attaching to a three day pack belt. I would also like to be able to use it with a regular belt too of course.
 
I think the cross draw would be the least cumbersome if carrying a slung rifle. As it is I have plenty of gear on my strong side anyway. From pliers, to sheath knife, or leatherman tool, pocket watch, pocket knife, etc.,
 
I am open to suggestions on a western style rig if it is proven to be suitable. I figure the Cowboys had the ability to design what worked and came up with the old gear because it worked, not because Hopalong Cassidy used it.
 
I want to keep this under $125 and $75 would be much better.

Take a look at Simply Rugged. The Pancake or the Loaded Pancake sounds like one of them may fit your requirements and price range.

Belt holsters get in my way with other 'field gear' or a backpack, especially if it has a belt. It bad enough with just my belt knife and kit. Plus the weight of a large revolver just pulls my pants down (I suffer from the all too common old guys disease; NBAA (no butt at all).
My solution is a 'Doc Holiday' or 'Huckleberry' type shoulder holster. I can work with both hands and the gun is secure and somewhat protected. I seem to keep banging up a gunbutt when its at waist level if Im doing other stuff than just going shooting.

I have definitely looked into those. My one concern is that I could come under scrutiny for concealing a handgun while hunting. It would seem to be a PITA over a winter coat, especially if size is critical to fitting one.
 
A Holster attached to by hunting ruck cross draw style is where I'm at for that reason. But I'll tell you, I am very interested in the Doc Holiday rigs I see. if you have any other thought out with them please.

And if you know how I switched to the leaning font do enlighten me, I have fat fingers and am very nearly computer illiterate, but I would like to do that on purpose every now and then.

Well by golly I do appreciate that tip. I'm a gonna be unstoppable on this thing in twenty years or so. And I'll bet this one does this.  Now how do I stop it?  Guess I'll have to be more careful with my boasting . Really how do I stop?

With any of the function icons like bold, underline or italics the way to do it is to first type what ya want and then highlight it and hit the proper icon. That way only what you want it to apply to will get the treatment.

With all such things there is a start and a stop command. Anything between the two commands will have it applied. So make sure that when you finish the function start typing again outside the stop command which will be a slash before the command.

BTW I got a pretty nice cross draw holster from Sportsman's Guide. They generally have them in stock.

What is the barrel length of the gun in the holster in the bottom left. I have a Blackhawk with 6 1/2" barrel and like the looks of that one. Do you have any issue with the gun not being secure when you wear it cross draw?

I got a Hunter style 4500 size 9 for my 6.5" Ruger flattop. Cost about $40. Ruger has some decent leather holster too,check their site.

The gentleman at Simply Rugged will make a holster for whatever barrel length you specify.  I have Sourdough Pancakes for barrels from 3 inches for an SP101 to 7.5 inches for a Ruger SBH.  The lower left one in the picture holds a 5.5 inch (I never can remember the exact length) old Vaquero in 44 Magnum.  The upper left is for a Bearcat.  I carry a 329 in the one attached to the Chesty Puller rig.  The 1911 is in one of their Cuda holsters.  I also have several of the Cattlemen holsters that I use often for Cowboy shooting.

I have never had any problems with retention using the Sourdough Pancakes worn crossdraw.  I have also had no retention problems with  the other models.  I think most models can be ordered with retention straps as an option.

Freedom arms was selling a cross draw holster in your price range that is supposed to fit your b.h.,and the article I read said they were a good holster.

I am also a fan of Simply Rugged holsters.  Strong side, cross draw, chest straps, and even IWB, all with the same holster if you want.
Simply Rugged made me a pancake holster a long time ago for a 4.75 USFA single action that had the option to even use his inside out snaps for IWB, not to mention strong side and cross draw, after that first holster and seeing how versatile it was, I ordered more holsters for different guns, I was never disappointed in anything I bought from them.

I had a custom cross draw made for my Blackhawk 4 5/8".   Also holds a Single Six 5 1/2" perfect, so they also made a matching belt with both 357MAG/22MAG loops.   Great rig, not all that expensive.

Review: I received the Sourdough pancake holster for my Blackhawk last week on Saturday. I read a tip on one of the boards on this site about putting the unloaded gun in the holster, then in a plastic bag, and then leave sit on the dashboard of the car in the sun for 2-3 hours. The gun fit good before, but after I did this, the gun fits perfectly. Strongside: The holster holds the Blackhawk close to my body, comfortable and secure. Crossdraw: it is comfortable, and would be easier to draw on a 4 wheeler or seated. I imagine it would be good for horseback, but have not had the opportunity to ride for many years.
The Blackhawk has a 6 1/2" barrel. The holster is about a 1/2" longer than the barrel. I like this because the bottom of the hoster is open. This lets debris fall out of the holster without building up at the end and potentially getting in the muzzle. The extra 1/2" protects the muzzle. Overall I am very pleased with SimplyRugged. The shipping was fast, the communication was excellent and the hoster product is superb. I also ordered a shell holder and am very pleased with this as well.

I have never used a retaining strap on any Simply Rugged holsters, since they are pancake designs just snugging your belt up puts pressure on the gun, but it's personal preference, some people might have a need for a retaining strap, so Simply Rugged does offer them and also offers a full flap to protect the gun even more if you need it.

I just got a Galco SAO holster for my 7 1/2" Super Blackhawk.  It can be work on the strong side or crossdraw. It also fits my 6 1/2" Blackhawk.
