Jeepmann1948, thanks to your question I weighed the monoblock after I bored for the barrel and it came in at 13-1/4 oz.  Best regards Piney Creek :)

Very acceptable weight for a beautiful strong action! Have you considered fluting the barrel?
Should make a great lightweight firearm!

A fluted barrel on a lightweight project is an interesting idea.  Any ideas for a "perfect" caliber?  Piney Creek

Octagon barrels can make for very light rifles too and would match the MB!  ;D

A 250 Savage would give you a great varmint/deer/ elk with (proper bullets) plus cases are available, low recoil, flat trajectory, good bullet choices, smaller case diameter (makes chamber metal stronger since you are using 7/8 diameter threads)excellent history for killing power beyond ballistics, plus it is a neat looking cartridge! Before I get blasted by suggesting a 250 Savage for elk ... check out what a lot of the old timers used and their success stories.
The 223 family of cartridges would be nice as well but they would lose some of the capability choices for hunting the larger critters.
The 30-30 and its siblings would be neat too hmm.. 7-30 Ack/ Waters with pointed bullets.
So many choices that you may have to make more monoblocks  ;D
Good luck with your project!

Now, with all these ideas I'm going to have to order more material.  My brother wants one with an octagon barrel for his cowboy shooting rig.  I am excited about this project but before much else happens I need to finish one and see if it shoots as good as I planned.  Piney Creek

Ordered a .38/.357 x 25 w/1:20 twist cut off to 18-1/2" from Green Mountain for the first one.  I have been looking at some data (I have done some handloading, pistol only) and one that looks promising is a 210 gr cast lead at 1400fps using H110.  That is just a preliminary direction I'm sure it will change before I get done.

The 1-20 twist will work very well with bullets up to 160 grains, it is a crapshoot on the heavier bullets.Sometimes they work sometimes they do not.
Good luck

Up date on the project.  The first barrel is just about finished except for attaching forearm stud and sights.  Fired a commercial .357 round just to see what would happen.  It all went well.  No primer cratering, no discoloration of cartridge mouth, perfectly centered pin strike and beautiful extraction.  I am a happy camper ;D Photos included.

Thanks for the comment Jeepman :)  Because of the nature of this platform the only constraint there is, is the cartridge base diameter causing me no end of sleepless nights pondering what I should spend my limited funds building :'(  At this moment I am looking at 38-55 with stock treatment in kind of period style with tang sights and maybe globe front sight.  Best regards Piney Creek

You might want to check out chamber reamer dimensions closely to match up properly to whatever barrel groove dia. you end up with. Oh, and there are two different lengths of brass available for the 38-55 also.

Would it be possible to set one of these up for a 10/22 barrel.  It would have to be bored off-center and milled to accept the Ruger v-block locking system.  I know that this is just a personal project, but I'm sure the guys on this forum would jump at the chance to get their hands in a DIY versa-pak that they could customize with multiple weight and twist rate options in 22lr or 17hm2 ;D   You might be able to get away with cheaper materials since it would be rim-fire pressures ;) If I get around to it I may draw something up and post it later.  I don't know anything about cad, but I have enough imagination to get it on paper ;D

ncloader88,  thanks for the comments.  IIRC the standard Ruger 10/22 tennon (the part of the barrel that fits into the receiver) is not long enough to use on a monoblock or stubbed barrel.  Also extractor issues could be complicated.  I could EMail a basic copy of my monoblock drawing if you would like.  Regards PC :)

I was thinking maybe it could be mounted in the block "upside-down" with a channel cut through the top to bring it back far enough to mate with the tennon.  That might eliminate the extractor issues, but would there be enough meat left on the top to cut a dovetail for scope rings?  Sorry for all of the questions, but I'm a dreamer ::)   This is probably not feasible, but it's fun to think about ;)

I don't want to throw cold water on anyones dream, anything is possible.  However, the modifications to the existing H&R platform are non trivial.  You can turn this around and use a fraction of the effort required to making a Ruger barrel fit by buying a blank in desired cal. from Green Mountain.  Then pay a gunsmith to fit it for a cost much less.  Some  .22lr blanks are as cheap as $35.00.  Regards PC :)

PC what a great project!  I see the plunger on the forearm you were talking about.  What was the intent for adding it?  Do you find that it helps accuracy?

Ol BW  in theory this device keeps a constant and equal pressure between the barrel and forearm and the receiver.  Whether or not it helps accuracy I will be finding out.  Regards PC
