DAN WESSON 357 MAX QUESTIONS
« on: June 17, 2012, 09:38:24 AM »
There is a Dan Wesson 8 inch 357 in my gun room that gets no play.   This is the two barrel package that was offered many moons ago.  The box and all components are with gun.  I have considered selling it several time and when I get it out I simply can not bring myself to do it...it is too pretty.  The gun is 99%, and a deep blue finish.  There is no cutting of top strap.

Well it may be time to sell it.  Could you folks give me an idea of what it is worth.  It is a strange time to sell 357 mags perhaps with the brass shortage, but I have several hundred that could go with gun as well.

Please give me idea of what gun is worth and what brass might be worth as well.

Thanks kindly,

Fred

This is a couple of years old from the Blue Book:

MODEL 40 (.357 SUPERMAG)
- .357 Super Mag. cal. (.357 Max.), double action, 6 shot, 4, 6, 8, or 10 in. barrel VR. Disc. 1995.
Grading100%98%95%90%80%70%60%50%40%30%20%10%
$410$340$285$260$240$230$225
Last MSR was $502.
Add $87 for slotted barrel shroud (8 in. barrel only), $22-$129 for heavy VR barrel, approx. $33 for each additional barrel length.
Brass is hard to find as it is "seasonal run". Rem 357 Max is $27 per 100 at Midway and they are back ordered (not available)

Wiley,

Thank you sir your pricing sorta took the wind out of my $ale$ as I thought it was worth more.  This inspired me to get off my duff and check into it myself.

The box says:  Mod 40-V8S (vent rib slotted), S#B0010xx) original wood and a set of hogue and a set of pacs are in box.

Most recent blue book puts Model 40 at $650 in 100% and $575 in 98%.

My revolver has the slotted barrel shroud and the vent ribb as well (book says to add $87 +$22to$129)

As well this gun is at LEAST 98% with box, docs, and tools.  And this is the box with two barrels.  The bun is 8 inch the xtra barrel is also 8 inch.  These where marketed to silly-wet shooters.  Gun is fired but not much there is no forcing cone erosion and top strap cutting is not present.

However a gun is only worth what someone will pay for it.  There is the same gun on Gun Broker right now, gun only with no box or additional barrel and after 16 bids it is $712 plus shipping.  I will be watching the outcome of this auction.

I may be tempted to sell this gun yet.  If I do it will be listed here in classifieds.

Thanks,

Fred

Well, as I said, the BB dvd is a couple of years old, and prices seem to go up at the same rate as the national debt. I don't normally sell guns and look at the BB as a "how much more than it's worth" decider for what I'm willing to pay. Since I already have a 40-V8S, I'm safe here!
One other point. As sold, the 40-V8S was certified by DW to make weight for IHMSA production class. The original grip that it came with was a part of that: Pacs would make it too heavy.

wiley,

I did not realize that the weight was that close, good to know.

Incidently, the G-broker gun went for $742.

Sincere thanks for your help.

Bought a nice one with extra barrel and wrench for $700 shipped.  Sent it to be converted to a 414 so I'm looking for  another 357.  Have been watching GA and GB pretty close.  Looks like $650 for a little wear and $750 for really nice.

Happy-H, didnt the serial run begin with B001000 ? Yours may be a very early one.  I believe the one I had was B001287 or something around that.  I once had a barrel seize in place and I know of others that had that happen. I'd suggest you use anti-seize on the threads. Also the barrel nuts were prone to stripping where the wrench fits them---again leaving you with a mess.  rp

Richard P,

Yes the serial does indicate an early one:  B0010XX

This is a "Monson" gun.

No trouble with threads or anything else.  In fact the barrel installed in gun, I feel is completly unfired.  The "spare" barrel is used but has anothe lifetime left in it as well.

Thanks every one for help with this gun, I have sold it.  I feel it has a good home.
