Remington 700 ISS / j lock replacement
« on: June 18, 2012, 03:31:19 AM »
Ive decided to replace the bolt shroud on my 700.  Never did like it and now my dog ate the "key" that operates the lock so pretty much just a wart on my rifle.

Would like any recommendation for a particular shroud.

Also, is it worth replacing the firing pin / spring with a lighter pin and faster spring while Ive got the bolt apart?   If so any recommendations on a particular pin / spring.

Thanks 'n Cheers

I bought the whole assembly from Brownells.  Costs about $50-$75.  Pops right in.

You didn't say long or short action but I have several of these on my Remmys. Worth it's weight in gold just for the trigger improvement. The ISS spring inside the bolt does not apply force straight to the firing pin. It's actually wound around the firing pin like a screw. Sear setup is never the same. This is a common issue with the ISS or J Bolt Remmys. Here's what I have in mine and love it:

Thanks DrDougrx and Larry L.

Ive already disassembled the ISS bolt, knowing that I was gonna get a replacement, just didn't know if a shroud  was sufficient or if I should go for a spring as well.

Larry, your description and link answered all of my questions, as each of the components including the lighter firing pin will have positive  function on improving my 700.  Really does seem to be a bargun.

Cheers
