I think it was just assembled backward.  Disassemble the magazine - make sure it is empty.  I think there is a pin  that holds the baseplate in, remove the spring and let the follower drop until you can remove the button through the enlarged hole right near the bottom of the mag, put the button back in on the correct (left side), re-insert spring and base plate, re-insert the pin or whatever holds the base plate in position and you should be good to go..  Good luck.

Actually it sounds like you received a 9 rd mag for a earlier Ruger Standard Model. Can you exchange it?

MK1 and MK2 mags are the same mag except for what side the thumb button is on. They are all reversable except for the origanal MK1 mags. They are all sent in the MK2 configuration. Just remove the base plat slide the button out and put it in the other side and put the base plate back on and your good to go.

Ruger Standard and Mark I target magazines are not the same as the Mark II.
Std and Mark I target use a 9 round magazine with a chrome, non-removable base.
Beginning with the Mark II series of pistols they changed to a style with a removable base and 10 round capacity.

If the OP's gun is truly a Mark I, or Standard model as the fixed sighted versions were called, then he needs the magazine that has a shiny base and holds only 9 rounds.
If it's a Mark II then the base is black plastic, removable, and it has a 10 round capacity.
Of course there were after market mags for both Std/Mark I and Mark II that may be different so this only applies to the factory magazines.

I have two MK1 pistols and several mags for them.  The Mk 1 came with a 9 shot mag and I have two of them. One on my older pistol only has a button installable on one side the other can be reversed.  I also bought several Mk II mags and switched the buttons to the other side and use them with perfect success on my MK I pistols.  I got the originally because I could not find Mk1 Mags but would buy the now in preference as I like the 10 shots better than the 9 shot version.

Tcrace is entirely correct!  Unless a fellow needs an original Mk I 9-shot magazine (as a collector) disregard and dispose of those POS-mags!

Do yourself a big favor and replace your Mk I magazines with newer Mk II mags!

Besides picking up a 10th round (vs nine rounds in the Mk I mags),

the Mk II magazines are TOTALLY serviceable come completely apart for cleaning ......

But when reassembled the button that depresses the follower for loading the mag can be assembled on whatever side a shooter needs it to, to fit his pistol!

In other words, the newer designed Mk II magazines will fit ANY Ruger Mk I or Mk II pistol when its assembled correctly for the pistol it will be used.  WORKING
EQUALLY WELL in either pistol!

I have no idea why they changed the side the magazine button is located versus the Mk I's, but being able to reassemble a Mk II with the button on either side makes the issue moot!

The Mk I magazine design was a huge weakness in that first-series Ruger pistol.  But Ruger completely fixed that problem when they redesigned and came out with the Mk II pistol and magazines.  Of course the Mk II pistol offers a couple advantages over the Mk I pistol too, not that Mk i's aren't still great pistols. I still love mine!
