Another twofer.

___?1___ and ___?2___ fled to Jack Chandler’s ranch near Tombstone. Sheriff Johnny Behan was out of town, so Breakenridge and his three-man posse left Tombstone just before midnight and arrived at the Chandler ranch a little before dawn. After knocking on the door and announcing themselves, a gunfight ensued. ___?2___ raced out the door shooting. John Gillespie, who had been a deputy sheriff less than twelve hours, fell dead, a bullet through his head. E. H. Allen was hit in the neck, but managed to shoot ___?2___  with a rifle shot. ___?2___  crawled back inside.

Breakenridge, safely ensconced behind a tree, took a shot at ___?1___, who now entered the battle. He hit ___?1___ in the head, and ___?1___ died of his wound instantly. Jack Young had gone to the back of the house when the first shots were fired, and he had been hurled back into the yard with a bullet-smashed thigh. ___?2___ plunged through the back door and up a small rise, making himself such a fine target against the breaking dawn of the skyline that both Breakenridge and Allen fired several shots at him. One of the bullets caught ___?2___  in the back, passing though his body and puncturing one lung. Though severely wounded, he still managed to disappear into the brush, where Breakenridge later found him.

I believe that:
#1 was Billy Grounds
#2 was Zwing Hunt, who also shared the same grandparents with a United States President.

You're right on, Doc.

For 10 bonus points, what was Billy Grounds' real name, and where did he come from originally?

How about sharing with us the Hunt presidential connection?

I am going to try and steal some points to make up for that lost treasure (never found rumored to contain gold bars and diamonds) Grounds and Hunt buried in Skeleton Canyon.

Grounds real name William Boucher

And Hunt shared Grandparents with L. B. Johnson

MOGorilla, guess you deserve at least 7 1/2 bonus points for that answer.  Billy Grounds real name was:

Arthur Augustus or DeCloudt Burtcher b. 26 Nov 1862 Blanco Co, TX. (just a few miles up the Pedernales River from where I now live).   Depending on the source, the last name is spelled "Burtcher", or "Burtscher".  His father, Michael Eugene Burtcher, was shot and killed by bushwhackers in 1864 not far from that Burtcher home place.

If you can locate a copy, there is a good article (Yours until death, William Grounds, by Janaloo Hill) in the March-April, 1973 issue of True West magazine.  The article includes transcripts of letters Grounds sent to his mother and a brother-in-law in 1880 from Shakespeare, NM (including one which mentions acquiring a horse from John Ringo for $65).  It also has excerpts from the April 1, 1882 Tombstone Epitaph report of Grounds' fatal encounter with Breakenridge at Chandler's milk ranch.

MOGorilla,

You have no idea what all is in my "backyard".  My maternal great grandfather, James G. Odiorne, once owned that part of the LBJ Ranch on the Pedernales River where the Johnson home is located.   His son, Thomas  Andrew  Odiorne, married LBJ's aunt, Kate Johnson.  My maternal uncle, Adolph Wolf, went to grade school in Johnson City with LBJ's brother, Sam Houston Johnson.  My wife, "Texanna Trueheart", worked for a number of years as a National Park Service Ranger at both the LBJ Ranch, and the LBJ Boyhood Home (Smokey the Bear hat and all).  I know, all that and a dollar might get me a cup of coffee (if I'm lucky), but there definitely is some interesting history around here, and we haven't even mentioned this area's connection with Scott Cooley, of Mason County War notoriety, or Company "B", Frontier Forces, or Company "D", Frontier Battalion.  Ain't history fun?
