Anybody use a double rifle case
« on: June 19, 2012, 04:04:32 AM »
I love hunting solo. I love hunting the mountain.  Especially run and gun traveling miles on the trails hunting key spots that almost always produce and few will bother hiking into.  I love the option of both a shotgun and rifle.  I HATE carrying two weapons plus fox pro, mouth calls, decoy, spare batteries, flashlights, knives and water.  So in the "tactical" world of supplies I found this.  Thinking of adding straps with snap buckles for noise control instead of using the zipper, but the back pack straps and storage area and the ability for two guns plus the supplies seems like the cats meow.  Anybody else use something similiar and want to share their opinion.
Here is a link to something similiar to what I am looking at.

Like you I always preferred to do the outdoors alone, often hiked miles into wilderness back country and lived off the land for up to weeks at a time.   So finding the right pack was a major need, and I went through several before finding the one that did it all for me.

The "do-all" I had years ago was similar to the one in the below link.   Don't remeber who made it, but I think it was called the Alaskan (I might have bought it through REI).   It too had many options like this J9 does that could be added or removed as needed to match what was needed on a hike.   It carried a full length scoped rifle or shotgun or a long/recurve bow with arrows well protected that could be accessed without taking the pack off, important to me spending most of my life in grizzly country.  It had tons of storage for other items, lash points for more gear and could be used to carry meat, etc back out.   I often carried an extra rifle or shotgun and fishing gear in it, along with my main pupose rifle or bow when hunting, and seldom had a problem with snagging them while hiking.    I lived in the high Rockies, and it was perfect for climbing the tallest and steepest "hills" in NA with.

Have seen lots of others since, but most hung the rifles, etc well below the pack bottom.   To me anyway not as forgiving as having a little "extra" above the pack, and with none of them could you access the rifle without taking the pack off.

Anyway, FWIW...

Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

Instead of carrying two weapons I use an O/U combo gun in 12ga and 5.6x50R

I use a Nimrod back scabbard, everything goes in it for long hikes and leaves my hands free for hiking stick , ski poles or steering the bike.

Most all my gun cases are singles.  I tried a double case similar to what you are looking at for an AR / M1a combo.  By the time I added the guns, magazines, and assorted odds and ends, the case was really to heavy and bulky for practical use, except for carrying from the truck to the range.

I much prefer the option of well designed a fleece back pack to carry my gear, along with my primary weapon carried on a sling.  Usually when I carry a second weapon, its a handgun, but if it was to be a second long gun, it to would be on a sling, across my back, or taken down, and stored in the pack.
