Handi Bipod
« on: June 22, 2012, 01:47:56 PM »
Been wanting a bipod to play with for a while now but always spend my play money on other things, like MORE HANDIS. :o  Anyway, last week I found a functional bipod for $10 at a local gun shop tent sale.  The bipod did not come with an adapter to mount it so I took it to a locally owned hardware store this morning and started digging around in their storage bins.  I found a couple of plastic 1/4-20 thumb screws.  The plastic shank of this screw fits snugly into the machined opening on the base of the bipod.  Grabbed a piece of 1/4 20 all thread rod ,  measure and cut a piece, right length the first time not sure how that happened, and had the bipod securely installed in about 5 minutes.   The bipod is mounted to the barrel stud and has a rubber gasket between the bipod base and foreend plus the required "o" ring on the stud. ;)

I am debating on whether or not to beef up the barrel stud before test firing, either TIG or very hard silver  solder.   I put the bipod on my 44 Bodeen which gives the 45-120 a run for the money in the recoil department so it should be legitimate test of the installation.   Knowing me, I will probably shoot it as is and see how it goes.  It will not be my first rodeo with a broken barrel stud. :-[

I am thinking I would rather have the legs of the bipod further aft so if I knock out the roll pin and reverse the yoke and then flip the legs around,  i can then rotate the base 180 degrees, legs will be 3.5" further aft and point the right direction.

I wondered why it was so easy to find the right parts and install this bipod without the usual "battle" i seem to have doing something for the first time.  Well a quick trip to gunbroker showed me why,  I found a NIB adapter for this bipod for under $10 shipped.  :P  I bought it anyway. ;D

Is the recoil on that thing more up or back ?

If it wants to rise , you should be fine , If its back , that could be another issue in itself  like broken legs .  :'(

Stimpy,

The legs fold forward, and will still fold forward if I flip the base, around so I guess the worst that will happen is they will fold up on firing.   The stock bolt channel is full of lead shot so I am thinking the muzzle tends to jump when shot but I am not sure since I always shoot it with my eyes closed. ;D

The reason this was 'so easy' is that it is not going to work well?!?!  :o :P
I have not had to replace a stud on one of these (yet!), but would think it WAY easier to TIG it in place before it removes itself.........
Also thinkin' that one of these is more a handy rifle stand for photos than for shootin'  :-X ;)

like anything else, you really don't know if it will work until you try it.  H&R welded this stud on several degrees off from plumb so it if breaks off at least I can put in back on correctly.

I've always been shy of bipods because of reading that the Handi's don't like to be rested forward of the barrel pivot.  So would really like to hear that it works great.

As always you do inspiring Handi things.

Thanks... the other Tom

This rifle rested off of bags right under the front stud shot these groups

So a Handi rifle can shoot well when rested under the front sling stud, off your hand under the fore end or with a bipod attached to the front sling stud for that manner. No O-Ring for mine either. Mine are fully bedded with a pillar.

Good Luck and Good Shooting

Ive been thinking of that bedding/pillar approach for some time, as Im not fond of the front of action bag position. Those pics are very encouraging to do so!

You also want them to lock up tight and be loose when open. Look in the FAQ on how I put my pillars in. The fore end becomes one with the barrel. I do have a separate fore end for each barrel. The (barrel) studs are not placed in the exact same spot for each barrel, so to maintain the loose fit for each barrel, you need to either make the barrel very loose for some and a little loose for others (which would work). The barrel fit would not be exact for different barrels how ever. They vary in diameter from barrel to barrel too. The smallest in diameter barrel I have is my 30-30 and the biggest is the 24" 223 Ultra.

BTW - That particular gun/barrel is a stubbed barrel chambered for 22K Hornet - she shoots every thing I put in it well, just some better than others. Out of the 4 group pictures, there are 3 different loads that were just thrown together - not developed. None of them are top loads, none of them go higher than the middle of the load range. The brass lasts a long time. The bottom 2 were the same load, but shot on different days. It is the one I have loaded 300 for and using for 'chucks and such.

Good Luck and Good Shooting

That 22K hornet is one sweet rifle!

I tried the bipod on several Handis the other day.  It was real windy so I wasn't trying to shoot groups just to see if I like a bipod (I do) and if it was going to wreck the barrel stud (it didn't).  I shot 240 grainers @ +2,500 FPS from the 44 Bodeen and 204 grainers at +3,100 fps from the 45-120 and studs and bipod are fine.  It does seem to make the recoil a little easier to handle, I base this on how  many rounds I fired from the big recoilers, about 50% more than usual.  Will try this again on a calm day and see what type of groups I can shoot.
