You could go with a 44 Bodeen, but you would have to buy a license agreement. ::)

405 win or a 416 cal. Since I had a 405 win I decided to go with the 416 Taylor. The big case and the 28" barrel let me use a slow burning powder and made a nice shooting gun. Since you don't have a 405 win it would be faster and cheaper to get JES to make it for you. You wouldn't have to change the ejector to a rimless.

John... (Insert head shaking, smiley here)  ::)  ;)

Jason,
The 405 would be my choice. Timmy has one, IIRC it was also form a 38/55.

Teddy called it "Big Medicine" a 40 cal, 300g bullet at 2400+fps...I agree with him...

Jason,
Just to point out the obvious.. Two of your three choices are rimmed.... ::)

Don't hate the rim, we don't have to have a one side or the other decision...  Go with WHAT EVER caliber "does it" for you. Rimmed or rimless...

I will take all those awful, inaccurate rimmed guns off your hands, since they do not shoot worth a darn. Yep, I will take them all and leave you the 30 carbine, 308, Whelen front loaders and shotguns...wait, the shotguns have rims too.

Seriously - If you are having issues with your rimmed cases, do not load them so heavy and then neck size them so they head space on the shoulder.....OR  you can adjust your dies so it just bumps back the shoulder enough to chamber, so it still head spaces off the shoulder. Of course you can not do that with a straight case, you are stuck shooting them straight up, but if you do not have a rim, you need to head space off the case mouth. Head spacing off the mouth, does not make your most accurate loads.

Rimless or rimmed, should not make any difference in accuracy. I happen to prefer a rimmed case for a single shot, break action gun but am not opposed to a rimless case. More than likely, if it were not that rimmed cases have trouble functioning reliably in bolt actions and semi/auto actions we would not have rimless cases at all. The rimmed case is stronger in the head section due to more brass there and extraction is easier to handle, but they donot funtion in bolts and certainly not auto actions very well.

Good Luck and Good Shooting

Just for consideration, I would think that a 300gr. .380ish dia projectile at 2400fps would also be 'big medicine', even though I know it isnt what you want.

38-72 will do 2400fps I believe if you can find/buy/borrow a reamer, no one rents it.  ;)

Sorry, I got the wrong impression, I just thought that if it had to be rimless there was a problem with the rimmed cases and I was just trying to be helpful. I am glad to hear that niether of you  have any problems with the rimmed cases

405 win  without a dout

wouldn't give the others another thought

have a twist rate  most suitable for cast bullits
