If you need to get them on order after 2200 on a Saturday night, that may be more difficult.

What about those model rocket igniters. I think they use a nichrome wire and piece of something else. They work great although a little bit expensive.

Electrical or electronic igniters are used in model rocketry, and they are not expensive. But the ones I have seen were an integrated part of the engine. So you would have to remove it, and then you would have an engine without a use. Or maybe you could put cannon fuse in it, and make a large bottle rocket (without report). If I could buy these ignition systems without the rocket engine, I would also be interested.

The cheapest electrical igniter I have come up with uses a short piece of #30 or smaller copper wire soldered to a length of 16 or 14 gauge lamp cord. Or you can use alligator clips on the end of the lamp cord to connect to the fine wire. Connect the lamp cord to a lantern battery and the fine wire will glow red hot.

The charge will fire almost instantaneously.

Didnt think about that G. They do make igniters without the rocket just went through 12 of them and only one acyully worked then my homade fuse went out half way down the vent tube. Ok someone asked what was i trying to do i didnt want to tell it because of the flags going up on safety. Here it goes i own 200 acres of field and woods nearst house is a mile away.I live in the middle of this 200 acres. I sell produce on the side i have 4 acres of garden 1 acre of corn i have a 1/4a. left that the deer didnt eat so i rolled my Mt. Howitzer out there at the edge of the corn with a 6oz. blank and a balled up news paper with a trip wire. ok i know what your thinking every one knows not to go in my garden because of this including the sheriff and Game Warden i did try Dynomite last year tore up to much corn. If i could get this problam solved i could even use Fireworks.

I like the idea of making an igniter with #30 or smaller wire. As a kid I made igniters by soldering wires onto a cheap flashlight bulb. We would carefully break off the globe, as to not damage the filament.

Just going straight to a filament sized wire sounds great. I guess back then we didn't know where to find copper wire that small. By lantern battery, I assume you mean six volt.

Yes, either the ones that are about 4" square or the larger ones are maybe 7" x4" and usually used for electric camping lanterns.

I found some time today to run with George's tip on #30 wire for igniters.

I didn't have wire anywhere near that small, but what I did have was some plain old 18 gauge multi strand automotive wire from Walmart. Multi strange is the key, because that means I have a bundle of iddy biddy wires.

You could just clip, strip, and unwind a section, and there you go. But I took a different approach. I made fusible links (igniters) like so: cut a short section and strip both ends, but strip way more off one end; then strip a center section by moving the insulation towards the long end. So now you have two bare ends, and a bare center section. On the center section, cut all strands except one. There it is.

I didn't have a lantern battery, but I did have my extra mower battery, so the test begins. The link went white hot and broke in less than a second. Next test: I folded a piece of duct tape over one with a little bit of Goex cannon power. Yeah boy, I like where this is heading.

I think I will try and find smaller multi strand. A want a size that will fit in the fuse hole when doubled over.

I see you guys have shown some fine commercial igniters, at good prices. But I am sort of an improviser at heart.

I would try to find some enamel insulated #30 or smaller wire; maybe Radio Shack would have it. Certainly an old time electronics store/ham radio store would have it.

Being insulated, you could twist it around itself so it would be stiffer and could be more easily inserted down the vent. The down side is you would have to scrape the insulation off of the ends to solder or hold with clips.

I am not at home and can't measure one, but I believe they are less than 2 inches long. We use them in 24 pdr coehorn, 8 inch siege mortar, 10 pdr Parrott and 12 pdr Iron Napoleon without any problems provide there is powder under the vent. We used these same primers on the Paulson's 13 inch seacoast mortar without a problem. They should be used with heavier pieces since the "trigger pull" can sometimes be on the heavy side.

I ordered up some of the friction primers that Artlleryman recommended.

This afternoon Southpaw and I tested them in his bowling ball mortar.

These things throw plenty of fire. He is a frame capture of the ignition.

The instruction sheet that come with these primers say that it takes 30 lbs of pressure to fire. We found that out.
