velocity and impact

Would there be muchdifference in velocity and impact  if the same bullet and load were shot from a  Ruger SRH ,44 magnum 71/2 barrel, and from a 10 inch ,44 magnum Contender barrel?

I lose about 10% from a 10" vs 14" 7mmTCU, so with a cylinder gap to consider + 7 1/2" vs 10" barrels you would lose & gain 15% to 20% is my guess.

I would say a little over 100 fps gain for the Contender with a full power 240 grain load.

I found that many full house loads that work in a revolver are too hot for use in the closed breach contenders. Velocity is much greater in the closed breach contenders than in revolvers.

You are right.

One of the factors responsible for this; is the slight pressure bleed from the cylinder gap.

But I have never seen a factory round, fail to extract from a Contender.  Not even the hottest ones.

T/C used to boast in the catalogs, that they got the most out of the magnum revolver rounds.  They did, and they do.

Generally you'll see a 200fps or so gain from a Contender over a revolver firing the same ammo.

Thankd for the replies. I've decided to try a 14 in barrel. I'm 80 yrs old, and I can't seem to handle the recoil onthat 10 inch barrel  like I did when I was younger.

I just want to say I hope I am still shooting my handguns when I'm 80! Congrats!

My chronograph results for the two .44 magnums are:
Winchester (white box) 240 grain JSP  Ruger SRH 7.5"  1357 fps, Contender 14" 1709.
Hornady 240 grain XTP Ruger SRH 7.5" 1403 fps, Contender 14" 1743 fps.

I don't understand your rationale with this.

Is the 14" barrel so much heavier that it soaks up noticable more recoil? I presume you get more velocity from the 14 incher which results in an increase of recoil.
