.30-30s and .32-20s shined today
« on: June 26, 2012, 09:43:43 AM »
For the .30-30s, I loaded 168 gr Hornady A-Max BTs over LVR for 2440 fps. for the Handi.  Sighted in at 200 yards it's dead on giving me a velocity of 2096 fps and 1639 energy at the target.  I'm grouping at 2 inches at 200, which is the best these old eyes can do.  I gotta love it :-* The bullet is less than 3 inches high anywhere along the way.

The 336 got a new diet too.  A 150 gr. Hornady Interlock RN also over LVR.  Sighted in at 150 yards it's running 2350 and giving me 1732 and 999 at the target.  It's more than adequate, grouping right at two inches.

The Handi and Marlin .32-20s got a workout also.  Both loaded with 100 gr. Hornady XTPs over H110 for 2170 fps.  The two rifles shoot almost exactly the same.  The Handi is slightly more consistent.  They're both .75 inches high at 50 and on at 100  The Handi is MOA while the Marlin shoots a little wider.  1.5 to 2 at 100.

I'm a very happy guy this evening.

Did you shoot that new in the box Marlin 32-20? :o I am shocked, well not really, guns are made to shoot, aren't they? Personally, I do not have collector guns, I have shooters and it sounds like you have some real shooters too. Good job Pete!!

Sounds like a fun and fruitful range trip Peter!!

I haven't really tired these "new" powders... I just got a can of Longshot and WOW!  A couple years back TRAIL BOSS and thats another WOW...

I have been reading up on this LVR and its on the "must try" list.

Good to hear the CL shoots well. As I have told you mine shoots very mild 115 SWC bullets with PB powder in one hole at 25 yards. But would probably skip off the ground once to reach 100...  ::) I don't remember chronographing it, but I know its under 1000 fps from the 22" barrel.

We have a 200yard range at one of the clubs I belong to as well... Just never use it! I like the 280yard "gong" at another club better...  ::) ;)

Keep it up and it good to hear from ya!

Yeah, LaOtto, I shot it.  That's what I got it for.  I'm too old to let it sit around.  Enjoy it now while I can. ::)

That LVR surprised me when I cracked it open.  The stuff is as fine, if not finer than 110 or 296.  You'd think it was pistol powder.  I can say one thing......it's not.  The full load is compressed.  I stayed 3/10ths under that.

CW, I was happily pooped last evening and turned in early.  You were talking about new powders.  The LVR sat on my shelf for six months or so before I got around to trying it.  To say I'm impressed with it is an understatement.  It's got me wanting to try  CFE223.  I've heard nothing but good about that one too.  Besides the .22s, I see Hodgdon listing it for other calibers like 7mm-08, .308 and .30-30.  It might be very interesting.  One thing is certain.  The performance of Hornady LE ammunition can safely and easily be matched or surpassed with LVR and the FTXs or other bullets.  For years, the 168 gr. BTs have been my mainstay in the .308.  After yesterday, they've got a home in the Handi .30-30. ;D ;D

An afterthought.  I wonder what I could do with CFE223 and the 115 gr. Commie bullet in the Handi .32-20 ??? ???

Scott, my 336 is a good shooter with heavier jacketed bullet in the Micro-Groove, but the Handi outshoots it hands down.  Good luck with yours.  Bring it with you when you come up and ring the 300 yard gongs.  It's a blast.
