Old Syko says;
"
The best aren't leaving. The best are hanging tough just like always and getting the job done despite the dregs. Those that choose to leave because they don't like the way things presently are will never make it in the private sector either because there just isn't that much different. The true best will never run." xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx To that I say "poppycock" ! #1) The best are NOT "running", but rather, walking away in disgust ! Some folks believe it or not, don't choose to live in a neighborhood filled with 'the dregs'..it's more about choices. As far as "never make it in the private sector either", that too is poppycock ! I know of one case where the #2 rated man in his MOS in the USMC left...and now has a better job by far, and paying more than he was previously paid, and he is using the skills our taxes paid to train him. True; this sicko move was not the only problem; there was the new "rules of engagement" , and "political correctness" in general, which in itself is enough to bring on regurgitation... xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Then from conan;
They can't even handle a couple of anti-terrorist actions without dragging the whole process on for over a decade, costing over a trillion dollars, buying a lot of junk they don't need, and putting tens of thousands of now dead or seriously wounded soldiers in places they never should have been. They were great in the past, but not today. It's bloated, over staffed, over funded, and poorly managed. Meanwhile they remain entrenched in places the don't need to be, like Bosnia. They build redundant military bases just to create more commands with high retirement benefits for everyone from colonel up.
Even the stupidities of the 1968 thru 1972 Viet Nam era don't compare to this foolishness.

Conan;
Some things you said, I agree with..but when you said;... "I don't think the military is filled with "good people"., I have to vehemently disagree. I would rather you said;.. " As with any other endeavor, the military has some bad apples." Now, that I could agree with. My concern, one I have voiced here regularly, concerns the heart of the fighting forces.. the NCOs !
Without adequate NCOs to lead, many more fine , young soldiers and marines will be killed. The NCOs, more than any other group, are the ones who do the most to keep the new guys safe.
To say they are not "good", i would hope you are not implying that they are not professional inm every aspect, since we probably have the best trained, best equipped, most dedicated and most professional combat troops we have ever had.
Yes, in the higher eschelons of rank..the officers promoted reflect the commander-in-chief and his attitude. It appears today's generals are very political, but don't blame that on the 95% or so, who are not among the "elite appointees"..
