My New Self Imposed Rules of Gun Buying

1. No more Marlin 39As.  Had about 5 or 6 and none of them functioned 100%
2. No more leverguns.  I'll probably keep the 2 that I own
3. No more single shots.
4. No more single action revolvers.
5. No more guns that are unsuitable for scope mounting.

I'm getting older and a move is in my future.  If it isn't suitable for deer hunting at 300 yards, I'm really gonna fight the urge to buy it. I'll probably get a CZ455 to replace my 39A.

Down size and simplify is where I'm going.

I have lived by those rules for a long time. I am keeping a Contender pistol and an Encore rifle but will not add any new single shots.

It's just for our very short and not worth it early muzzleloader season.  I wish they'd let us use cartridge guns like several other southern states do.  I also wish we could use crossbows during the archery season.

Pretty hard to get rid of a gun.I got guns I havn't shot for 20 years.But you never know ,,Imight just need them some day!
I could trim my gun collection down to no more than 10-15 guns and still have more guns than I relly need.But when did -NEED- ever count for anything when it comes to what gun you are looking at?

I'm in the same boat as m-g Willy.  I have guns I haven't shot in 20 years, and I even have a few that were taken out of the box and put in the safe....never to see the light of day since.


The two rules I started following that have really paid off:
- If I have to buy it with a credit card, I don't buy it (unless it's ordered on-line).
- If I find something I just HAVE TO HAVE, I wait 6 months to a year.  If it is still the gun on the top of my "want list" at that point, I'll start shopping around.


Everybody I know picks on me because of my collection.  They just can't comprehend why I have 3 HUGE safes packed full of guns.  My justification is that every gun in there was bought as a good deal, and will always be worth no less than 75% of its original value.  When the time comes, and I am dead and gone, my wife can sell them for a nice chunk of change to put toward breast implants and a new husband.

I hear ya. My son and I have gone through a lot of firearms and weeded out all but the best. Each one we now own has a specific purpouse. I think you'll like your Encore. I've had my .270 since 01. Couldn't imagine hunting with anything else. That's why I bought a .50 barrel for it so I can use it Muzzy Season too. My son liked mine so much he retired his Ruger All Weather Mark II 7mm mag and bought a T/C Pro Hunter 7mm mag.

If you young and into guns think about getting the larger semi auto's now.  The big bore bolt actions are harder on the body as we get older.

That is how I bought my Encore, with a 209X50 barrel. Then bought a 18 inch 45/70 Katahdin barrel for it. Now its my go to deer rifle. I love the weight, feel and balance of it.

Can't say no more single action revolvers. I still love shooting them with iron sights.

you can go one of two ways
nice safe queens or Hunter types
 
I find nice guns dont get much use (they have to stay nice) or single shots, I love sinleshots (have a few) but dont hunt much with them, my fave carry is one of three, a Marlin 60, The Taurus 72, the Remington 552  (i have ruger 10/22 but dont like them hunting because the stock and sights)
 
In the end if your going to be spending more time in the field, get a gun your comfortable with and can hit what you aim at, it should carry well and has a good supply of ammo, all that time spent in the field is wasted if your loading a second shot as a wounded critter makes trax for the next township.
 
most centerfire calibers do well at 300yds, a distance most normal sportsmen would have a time of it hitting the vitals of a Deer size target in a split second decision to make the shot or not.
 
I know a few friends, relatives and neighbors that carry the .243,  #2 choice is the 7mmx08 #3 is the 270 & 30-06
 mild shooting rifles that work well on big midwestern white tails and mulie
, with lighter bullets do ok on coyotes.

Yes, many states allow crossbows Archery Season if you have an exemption permit due to a disability. I have one myself for here in Missouri. The duration of the permit, and rules that apply, may vary from one state to another. More and more states are simply allowing them anyways, such as does Arkansas, which has done so for some time. My permit is an actual card issued by the Conservation Dept. and is permanent. ( I'm "Grandfathered in" as to it being permanent.) Those issued now are doctor signed, department aproved, forms and only good for 6 months to 5 years. Here's a link to the application and rules;

If your gona buy a cz rimfire, get ready to do a lot of work on it, first heat and bend the mag foller so it will feed then buy trigger kit so you wont need a hydrolick jack to pull the trigger then glass bed the action, then you will have a good shooting rifle, i know from experience.

Gee, I got a 452 Trainer and it must be a good one...its about perfect right from the box....didn't need the bushing/spring kit...tack driver with about the best iron sights around today. Has never malfunctioned with any ammo....makes most brands of ammo shoot well.

Same story here, (mrcooper)... I have a 452 long barrel that's stock sans the Williams peep and lighter spring I put in trigger. I didn't "need" to do the spring but it was so easy and cheap why not

The gun shoots great.

I HIGHLY recommend the CZ line for fine rifles
