20 gauge #1 Buck
« on: June 28, 2012, 03:38:35 PM »
I know this is not a slug, but is there any reason I cannot find 20 gauge ammo that is loaded with #1 Buck or larger?  I can find 16 gauge and 410 that has 00 in it, but no 20 gauge stuff.  Reason is we need #1 or larger buck to be legal for Bear in WA state.  I don't need a slug, my gun is a Savage 24, 30-30 over 20 gauge.  Larry

:)  Howdy! All I have ever seen is #2 and #3 buck for 20 gauge. I bagged one buck deer with #2 buckshot; however, it was very close to my stand. I don't think #3 is good for much of anything hunting wise. If I were you and wanted to hunt with buckshot, I would get a 12 gauge. Just my thoughts! Always, Gene

I think the 30-30 will do just fine, it would just be nice to be legal with the other barrel.  Think there is any reason (mechanically) that they are not loaded for a 20 gauge?  I have some #2 buck, and I guess I could get my brother in law to load up some #1 or 0 or 00, but am wondering if the dimension of them could end up getting tangled up in the barrel?  Larry

I "think" you can't find anything bigger in a 20ga is due to a couple reasons. First off, the 16ga was/is considered a good bird/deer ga way back when they had unprotected shot (no shot cups) and the 16 was very popular. It didn't set the woods on fire, but it worked up close. .410 buckshot has always been more or less for 2 legged protection or rabid dogs ( about the same thing, right?) The 20ga became popular about the time shot cups.modern powders, etc came along and #3 (later #2) was the largest thaqt could pattern well out of that bore size. It's like when the 3" 12 came along, #1 was a far better overall killer than 00 because it patterned better. Nowadays, with even more modern components/loading methods a 3" 12 is Beast of Wrath on about anything, ha. I dare say more money was spent on developing great slug rounds for a 20 than buckshot. Up close, #3 can kill just about anything, but you can't use it. Unless you just want to experiment ( not that there's anything wrong with that,ha) you'd be better off with a good 1oz 20ga slug or a bigger gun.
Now, if you "really" want to experiment, try patterning "ringed" shells....which will be just like shooting a slug in effect. Ringing is cutting the case strategically so that the entire shot/wad/case go out the bore! Not the modern way, but during the Great Depression, people came up with ingenius ideas. They will kill the biggest Brahma Bull in the woods, ha. Myself, I never tried it, I'm not that desperate...but its good to know these things if "if our own Little Depression grows up! :-\

Larry, I cannot improve on what Gene has posted here.  A 20gagger just isn't much a deer slayer with buckshot.

If your local squirrel sheriff won't try to claim you're using your 20ga tube for anything nafarious byallmeans use the .30-30 tube on booboo bear, or buy or borrow a 12 gauge.   ;)

It all makes sence to me.  I will just carry it with some number two in it and say it is for shooting Coyotes.  Larry

:)  Howdy! Be sure and check your hunting regulations. They differ from place to place, etc. If it is deer season and your packing an illegal round in your pocket, you may get a ticket by a game warden. We have some WMA in Texas where you can't possess certain shotgun loads while hunting. Just a thought! Always, Gene

Larry, you could get a .590 or .600 RB mould and have some double ball loads created, though that would be heavy....maybe a couple of slightly smaller RB's?..

We are fairly good here with the regs, a few dumb things, you can use a 25-20 to shoot a Moose but you cannot shoot a Deer with a 22-250.  Mostly I use the Savage 24 because Grouse season and Bear and Cougar are at the same times, so I can drop in a #8 shot shell and pop a Grouse.  It was curious why there were no heavy shot loads (larger than #2 Buck) for a 20 gauge when there were lots for a .410.  PS, good thought, I have some .570 round balls sitting here for my .58 ML, couple of them in a 3 inch shell should do a good job.  Larry

it took all of 2 seconds to find 20ga 00buck  http://www.ableammo.com/catalog/royal-buck-shotshells-rb209-gauge-1345-buckshot-rdbx-p-125192.html

But, I would put a slug in the 20 barrel . If you use a scope I would use see thru mount. Use the scope for the 30/30 barrel, and the open sights for the slugs . That way you have regulated sights for each barrel. Just my 2cents worth.

:)  Howdy! I am not sure that a 20 guage can hold 9 00 buckshot. I am thinking that a 12 guage 2 and 3/4th inch holds about 9 00 buckshot. Always, Gene

I feel your pain Larry. Here in NH they have a 00 buck minimum which means a .410 shooting 3 pellets of 000 is legal but a 16 gauge shooting 12 pellets of #1 is illegal. :o

Only took a couple of minutes reading reveiws to find out it is not really 00 as known in this country, much smaller than us 00..about like the federal #2 buck..

I always thought a M24 would be a great gun for shootin slugs what with the rifle sights and all.

Rio 20 gauge buckshot is #1B  measuring .29"  which is exactly what Winchester #1B (12 Ga) measures:

Solved my problem with http://www.custombuckshot.com He loads up most anything you could need for a 20ga.  I even got some "T" shot loaded, try to find that any place else for a 20 gauge.  Price is not bad if you are not shooting it up on targets.  Larry
