If alternative energy production comes on line, it will be the big companies that will bring it on.  It will not come on line until it becomes profitable, whether next year, or 25 years from now.  Even Exxon is spending millions to see if it is profitable to have algae oil production.  It is their money, but they will not expand it until oil gets way over $100 a barrel and stays there.  It has been shown that wind power does compete with natural gas cost wise.  It is still cheaper to tap into a local gas main to run gas turbines for electricity than build the large scale power transmission lines to bring wind power to where power is needed.  It is true that the plains states can produce a lot of wind powered electricity, but getting it east of the Mississippi and the west coast where it is needed is the expensive hurdle no one wants to cross yet.

Excellent post DD..it only makes common sense, and the developments will ensue without spending taxpayers money foolishly.
Of course, we already know these Eco-Freaks don't really care about "clean energy"...nearly so much as they are concerned with crushing capitalism.  Clean energy would at best, be only a by-product.

Just a bunch of watermelons..."green" on the outside, but RED inside..

Small scale solar hot water and heating are cost effective IF you install it yourself.  Most people just don't want to go to the trouble yet.  Small scale solar pannel with battery backup is still more expensive than a gasoline generator.

Now you want to help, a couple in Houston recently bought a new Voltswagon diesel rated at 43 mpg highway.  They broke a long distance record by driving 60 mph to Virginia and got about 80 mpg doing it on one tank of gas.  This was the VW Passat TDI 4 door sedan that cost $25,000 +/- new.  Had a supervisor who's wife had a VW beetle diesel and got over 50mpg constistantly.  Diesel averages 7% more nationwide than gasoline yet VW states their diesels get about 25% better mileage than their gasoline counterparts.  They cost less than hybrids yet are in the hybrid range for fuel economy.

Sorry to hijack the thread.

I wouldn't generalize so much about the west coast.  The Pacific Northwest is not lacking in power options.  California might need the power, but they are well on their way to bankruptcy.  I doubt that any kind of power would be capable of saving California.
