Barnes .458 Original Semi-Spitzer 400 grain?
« on: June 29, 2012, 12:22:18 PM »
Anyone shoot these bullets in an UN-modified 45-70 Handi ?
Has anyone shot any big game (Black Bears) with this bullet?
Any help is appreciated

Have not shot any game with them, but a friend in Alaska swears by the flat nose. I think the pointed 400 is taylored to the .458 velocities.

John, Cabelas has the 300gr Rems in stock if'n ya buy 500. Last time they had the 405gr on sale I bought 500 of em for $82 shipped, now they want $180 just for the bullets.  :-\

I like the Remington 405....but I cant find any anywhere....
So I need a more reliable source for a reliable bullet.
So Remington loses a customer for reloading components, and Barnes (or speer) gains one.
Probably around 1900-2000 fps...I think it should do it for a N.E. Black Bear.

1900-2000 should do it for a N.E. Greyhound bus!   ;D

I hunt with the Rem 405 over IMR4198 at 1950 fps.  I haven't had the opportunity to use it on bear yet, but that's what it's loaded for.  It's one of those loads that kill at both ends :o :o  More realistically, my shots on deer here at home can be anywhere from ten to 300 plus yards, and I like that bullet for distance.......Haven't tried it yet on buses. ::)

Jimbo,
I cannot comment on the Barnes, but I will also attest to the Remington 405 as well as the Speer 400g bullets and Black bears.  I load them to 2000 fps and have shot thru a couple of the bruins.

The last one was a 200+ sow at about 25 yards, shot THRU BOTH front legs and her neck as she dropped her head to go in the barrel.... Bang flop. ;) That was a Speer and 4198 Powder at a chronographed 1950 fps.

400+ grain bullets ALL THE WAY! If I was gonna use a 300, I would be shooting my 45 Colt or 454...

Greyhounds...ahahaha....to funny.
CW, THATS what I was looking for, Thanks.
Maybe the 350 Hornady FP 400gr or the speer 350 at the same speed. We will see.

Thanks Guys.

The originals were made with a  pure copper jacket filled with soft lead which would not require 458 Win velocities. Last I looked they were pricey.

The 400 gr Speer makes a good substitute for the 405 Rem.

The Price is ok, I don't shoot that much, But I want to be sure to have the bullet not seperate and to go on through.
Also, If a bone, or bones, are hit I need to be sure it will not break up.

At the velocities you are looking at I would presume the two Hdy 350 gr(# 4502 and 4503) and the Speer(#2478) of the same weight should be excellent.

BTW. Speer shows .458 Win Mag loads up to 2400 fps for the 400 gr. bullet

BTW. Speer shows .458 Win Mag loads up to 2400 fps for the 400 gr. bullet

But that doesn't mean it's a good choice in the 458, this is what the Speer #13 has to say about it compared to the 350gr Hot-Cor. Using the 350gr or 400gr is dependent on the load level, the 400gr is soft enough to expand even at their trapdoor levels(21kpsi), the 350gr would be a better choice in levergun loads above 28kpsi which is where their levergun loads end, right at the SAAMI trapdoor max. Their Modern rifle loads are capped at 35kpsi. ::) The 350gr Speer loaded to Hodgdon levergun levels(40kpsi) would make an excellet choice in the Handi, specially if the Handi is short throated like most 45-70 Handis are.  ;)

Tim

Quote
The 400gr soft point has a relatively thin jacket. It is fine for elk and moose but we prefer the newer 350gr Hot-Cor for most North American game including large bear. Even though it is 50grs lighter, the 350gr bullet normally out-penetrates the 400gr due to its tough, heavy jacket which was designed for 458 Mag velocities.

No argument from me. I would use the 350 gr stuff if I wanted to abuse myself with those velocity levels.
