Expect more of this. Remember all recent crisis type situations, say, 9/11, Katrina, financial meltdown, etc. What was happening? There were people begging the government to do something. "Pleeeze help me!!!!" was the refrain. And a sympathetic public responded by giving up more of their freedoms and independence, getting nothing in return but systems so horribly damaged that we lament the beginning of the Iraq and Afghan wars, the bailouts, the corruption of bankruptcy law, and a crushing system of entitlements. You probably advocated some of these things yourself, conservative though you may think yourself to be. We are all guilty.
