17HMR Sportster for the most part, we don't have any many varmints here other than graydiggers(CA ground squirrel), so the 17 works best for me out to 150-200yds or so which about as far as we usually see em.

45 ACP Shorty Handi, with 200 grain LSWC over 3.4 grains of Red Dot and small winchester pistol primer.  Screams along at just over 600 FPS, no suppressor and no hearing protection needed.  PBZ of 75 yards and minute of woodchuck to +100 yards if you know the rainbow. 8)

Like Tim I also like the 17 RF's. I have used the HMR on a couple coyotes with good success on head shots at under 50 yards. It's a little bit of a cheaper option too. Both for the gun and ammo.

Like John I also am lucky to have a wonderfully accurate .223.

.223 ultra varmint for longer range stuff. My brother uses a .357 Handi on his tractor. Recently I've used my .357 Max on some feral cats on the farm....158 gr XTP's disintegrate them at 30 yards.
If he's carrying a singleshot, don't expect a warning shot!

Scott, Usually inside a 100 yards or so, it's the .32-20 or the .357.  When they get farther out and I really want them dead, it's the .223 or .22-250.  If they're out beyond 200, I get a little weird and may pick up the .45-70, .30-30, .38-55 or the .356. instead.  I think you'll understand it better when you come up after your bear and you see the setup.

For cheap shooting I use a 22K hornet , then its a choice of: 204,223,22-250,22Cheetah,243,6mm Rem, 6mm Ack Imp,250 Savage,257 Ack Imp,25-06, 25-06 Ack Imp,7 TCU,7-08, 270 Win.357 Max
The Rooster is partial to his 357 but I have a 220 Swift in the works for him.
To be honest though not all of my choices are in a Handi, but 8 of them are.

I use a standard weight Handi Rifle stainless steel barreled .223 topped with a affordable Russian made Barska 3 x 9 scope.  Only varmint we have around here are wild goats.

In a Handi,it's the .22 Hornet. As a rule, it's a .17 HMR ( relatively quiet,accurate, doesn't ricochet like a .22 rimfire, blah,blah,blah) but I don't own a Handi chambered  in a hummer.

I used to use a 22 mag but that went to grandson, now it is mostly the Hornet with a std 357 Mag close behind. With the temps so high and the humidity at 20% or less, until it rains again, I;m not shooting anything! ( still waiting for an AAC- psuedo 32/20) ::)

In a Handi it would be my 22K Hornet. At present, it is residing at my lake place for that very purpose. Very accurate, not too loud and puts down woodchucks with authority. .224" 34 grain hollow points tripping at 3150 fps...goes in, but does not exit; so no ricochet, even when the bullet hits the ground beside the intended target. That is a safety feature that is a must with any thing I use for varmints.

Good Luck and Good Shooting

We don't have much small game here so I just stick with my 30-30 loaded with 150 gr. NBT's and LVR powder.  Does well on coyotes, hogs and deer up to 200 yards.
