After straddling the fence for the most of a year about getting some hydro-dip kits for some of my rifles, I spent the money on a CCW instead. So I did some research on different ways to do camo painting on stocks and settled on the "rattle can/ sponge method". I have done 4 stocks (3 Axis and one Handi) now and I think I have it about down.
My rifle is in the middle along with some of the family's Axis rifles.
Process is REALLY easy. Remove stock and tape off any area that you do not want painted after scuffing up the surface. Spray paint a base coat (OD green on top and bottom and tan on mine in the middle) and let it dry. Take another color and spray some random areas and let dry. Take the opposite colors and dab the paint onto the stock with a natural sponge for the random blotches of color to break up (tan on the OD Green and OD Green on the tan) and let dry. Followed up with Earth Brown (darker than I would have liked, but turned out nice anyway) with the sponge and let dry. Covered the whole thing with a couple coats of flat clearcoat.
The Axis on the bottom is the last one I did. Really need to see them close up to see the improvement in technique.
I really wanted the ACU digital dip kit for my rifle, but I think this will do. I don't expect this to be near as durable a finish to the dip kits, but I did 4 stocks for a third of the cost of a single dip kit.
