Well an internet friend in the Northeastern US could have use Swampmans magic as he was loading some ammunition for his brothers 270 Win Remington Model 710 for the upcoming deer season this year. The rifle is about 7 years old and not been shot much at all Brother is not a shooter/reloader just the average once a year deer hunter type.

Anyway after collecting the rifle and as he put it:-

Quote
My brothers rifle is a Remington 710 in .270 that my father bought him for Christmas about 7 years ago. After give this gun a good cleaning and examining it a little further, there are a few things I have to say about it, which I may take some "flack" for. I have been pretty hard on this gun, and have never even shot it. I "ranked" it up there with the 742 woodsmaster as one of remingtons all time "flops". I must say though, after taking it apart, getting it cleaned up, and actually shooting it, for 325.00 with a scope, it is not a bad gun.
Yes, it is ugly! I like synthetic stocks, which is no secret, but this one is ugly. That said, recoil is really light, better than any .270 I have ever shot, so the stock design may have some part in that. the action is certainly not the greatest but it puts the cartridge in, and pulls out the brass. the barrel and action seem nice and "tight" to the stock leaving no room for play. AND, this rifle has a nice crisp trigger!!! This pull cannot be over 4lbs. I have only one rifle in my cabinet that has a better trigger pull and that rifle had a trigger job. I would say that a person looking to get a cheap weapon so they can occasionally hunt, cannot go wrong with this rifle (considering all the factory recalls have been done)

So there you go the stage is set. Despite his optimistic approach troubles soon reared their head with poor grouping. However after the 5th load tried he did get a 3 round group of just over 1". So another small batch will be loaded of that recipe and tested to see if it was fluke or really does group around MOA.

Sadly it seems that others don't have Swampman's magic touch and get bug hole groups straight off with every Remington rifle. The first group was more like Three inches for the three shots :( .

O'Conners  load using a 130g bullet and 4831 powder is the end all for many 270 shooters. I would start there...

Of coarse swampys answer would something akin to " Green n Yello Factory Remington corlokt ammo , @13$ a box, will turn that 710 into a 1/4 MOA rifle. I do it all the time." ;) Sorry Swamp, I couldn't resist. ;) ::)

58-59gr of H4831sc and 130gr Sierras has proved a plenty accurate easy shooting load for me.

Thanks for the suggestions but as pointed out it was not me doing the load development. Let's face it this a Rem 710 and it would a cold day in Hell before I got involved with one but that's not the point.

The point is that it failed to give the sterling out of the box grouping expected. Giving his assessment of the rifle and how it surprised him with trigger break and general feel he expected better from the get go.

No doubt with the magic green swamp ammo it would have met his expectations......................  ;) .

Meanwhile I am awaiting the next instalment to see if that last load proves itself to be reliable MOA or if it was a fluke.

IMR-4350 is the powder you need.  Since I'm not shooting the rifle, I wouldn't expect too much out of it.  I almost never meet a person that can shoot an MOA group with anything and I spend a lot of time on the range.

Ask and yes shall receive... There ya go Brit. It's an impossibility, Swampy ain't there to shoot it. Tell your friend to give up while he is ahead.  ::)

92% of all plane crashes and poor groups are due to human error.

dang it all .. i just have to agree with ole swampy..
the majority , i cant say its 92% as swampman says, but the majority is IS human error when not getting a descent group.
and stating that factoid of info does not make him, me or anyone else a jerk.

if you have ever spent any time as a range officer, or have taught a group to shoot you'll soon find out that its is usually the human error and not a bad barrel or heavy trigger thats the issue  .. whether your on this or that side of the pond.

Acc2700 powder Win Mag primer Hornady 130gr SST work up from listed data stay one grain below max data due to the mag primer. If the shooter can shoot and the guns ok you should get some tight groups.

Thank you and yes even Swampman   ;D  having thought about this during the day I'll send him a link so hje can read the replies himself ............................ saves me copying and pasting them  ;) . He can then use the information as he sees fit.

I suspect he is busy with family today though.

For me, I'll have to agree. My .270 does best with IMR 4350. Used to be WW 785,but that is no longer made.I get 1 inch groups out of my unsuitable Mauser action.
