Interesting Find
« on: July 03, 2012, 12:50:36 PM »
On Sunday I was at the range and as I was finishing up I picked up a bunch of range brass.  One of them was marked .30-06 RP but it measures 2.530 and the rest of the dimensions match a .270 case.  It had the appearence of a new once fired case with no evidence of having ever been reloaded.

It could have been a stray round that fell off the line at the factory and got tossed in with a 270 batch run or more likely someone formed it at home and just ran it through thier tumbler before loading to remove the sizing marks ( like I do ) .

I know that when I have done 270's from 06 that they end up short like that .

Why do you tumble to remove the sizing marks?  Is it so they look nice or other function?

I do it more to remove case lube than anything else , yet it also helps clean the primer pockets once the old ones are removed .

Yesterday I was at the range with a granddaughter shooting a new to her Browning A-Bolt in 270 Winchester.  I have load a bunch of training loads for her using -06 brass, commercial and military.  I prefer the military because it does not say -06.  We did not leave any brass behind.

But to the point.  There has been a few times that I have forgotten and left cases tumbling over night.  They come out look better then fresh factory cases.

Neck sizing might leave few marks on the case.

It's too long to have started life as a .30-06 case.

Nope , its just right to be a 30/06 formed into a 270 Win , when you drop the neck size down  , it pulls the case longer , been doing it for years .

A quick look at the headstamp should tell you what the brass originally was.

I have seen many a box of ammo traded and done this way. You simply pull the bullet, dump the powder, lube the outside, and case neck, remove or back off the primer punch, and re size the factory 30-06 brass into a 270. Re-powder with proper charge, and seat a 270 bullet. You now have a 270 with a factory 30-06 brass, and factory primer. This ain't rocket science, and I have done it a many a time, when I got a good deal on an alterable round. Beware of the obvious. ;)

This case hadn't been inside a die since it left the factory.  You can tell.

The 30/06 should be 2.494" and the 270 is 2.540" , maybe it was just Head Stamped wrong , I'm not sure at what point the markings go on in the forming process >
