Trap Gun stock vs. BC stock
« on: July 04, 2012, 06:17:44 AM »
Hi, fellow handi-rifle shooters.  This is my first post, but I have been using the information on this board for quite some time.  I am building a handi .308 for my 16 year old son to deer hunt with, and have some questions about the Trap Gun stock.  How closely does the finish of the Trap stock match that of the BC stock?  I will be using a BC forend and would like to know if the coloring of the two will match before I order a Trap stock.  Also, is the cheek position of the BC and Trap stocks the same?

Thanks,
backwoodshunter

You might want to check on availability, it may be a moot point since the entire Topper line was discontinued, they may not even have any in stock.  :-\ As far as matching stock and forend, they match them at the factory, if they just send a stock, you may be disappointed, here's a perfect example on my BC Carbine, the barrel and forend were accessory parts, the forend doesn't match any of my BC or TDC stocks, it's much darker.

Good luck,

Tim

Cheek position is not the same, but I like my Topper Deluxe Classic wood on my one target 38-55 with a scope just fine, and would definitely like it on a harder kicker such as yours. My other 38-55 Hunter has the peep and a bead front, handles and feels different with the std. TM (BC) wood, but that is the 'right' wood for the character and use of the rifle for me.

I purchased one of those Topper Trap Gun butt stocks, but not the odd-shaped TTG forend.
The finish is more of an oiled or satin semigloss finish as compared to the shiney Varnished Buffalo Classics.
I ordered a Topper Deluxe Classic forend at the same time.  The TDC forend has a fairly Straight Groove cut for a topper Shotgun barrel versus BC Rifle barrels with a pronounced step - but the TDC forend color matches the TTG buttstock.

About fit - the TTG drop at comb is listed as same, but drop at TTG Heel is less than Buffalo Classic, (making the TTG buttsock more of a Straight blow-back type recoil).  (The TTG buttstock drop at heel equals its drop at comb).  So the fit at shoulder may be different at various firing positions.  I am not a trap shooter but I believe those who do may lean forward for a different gun & stock feel/fit.  Hope this helps.

The thick Pachameyer butt pad on the TTG buttstock is just what many need.

Thanks for the replies.  I was informed yesterday that the Trap Gun stock was no longer available.  Looks like I will be using the BC stock instead.

The checkered walnut TDC would be an alternative, lots of them made and often available used in the classifieds here, I have a few on rifles.  ;)

Wow, that stock does look good on a rifle!  I'll have keep an eye out for one in the classifieds.  I really need find one soon, though.  It's for my son's 16th birthday (October), and I'm wanting to get some engraving work done to it before I give it to him.
