Playing with buckshot--if you care
« on: July 04, 2012, 01:34:16 PM »
Thought I would do a short test of buckshot.
I use winchester 12 ga.  2 3/4 00 buck for in house protection.So I wanted to see what it would do if need outside at a distance.
So here is my findings. ( I threw in some 7 1/2 bird shot loads just to compare pattern size.)
(GUN 20"  BARREL OPEN CHOKE)
2 3/4  7 1/2 BIRDSHOT>
20YDS=20" KILL ZONE
30YDS=24" KILL ZONE
Buckshot 2 3/4  00
 10YDS=8 1/2" SPREAD 9 PELLETS
20YDS=12" SPREAD 8 PELLETS
30YDS=21" SPREAD 9 PELLETS
40YDS=29"SPREAD 8 PELLETS
(Gun 20" barrel mod.choke)
2 3/4   7 1/2 BIRDSHOT >
30YDS=16" KILLZONE
40YDS= 24" KILLZONE
BUCKSHOT 2 3/4  00>
20YDS= 8" SPREAD 9 PELLETS
30YDS=12" 9 PELLETS
(GUN Full choke)
2 3/4 7 1/2 BIRD SHOT>
30YDS=14" KILLZONE
40YDS=20" KILLZONE
BUCKSHOT 2 3/4  OO >
30YDS=12"SPREAD 9 PELLETS

BTW=Kill zone for the #7 1/2 birdshot was determined by what size pattern would be reliable to put down a duck or rabbit.

Howdy Willy, I have a 870 that I keep loaded up with some 00buck, picked up some of the 3" Remington stuff from Wal-Mart and was well pleased with how it shot from a modified choke.  Looks good for outside to me, I did have mine full of some S&B brand #4 buckshot. It didn't have a cup inside the cartridge to hold the shot and it spreads much faster than the Remington shells I have. Would be good for in the house distances. I've read of using too tight of a choke such as a turkey choke and "blowing up" the pattern even quicker so a feller can hit what he is aiming at up close with more ease, but I have not tried it. Like you I wondered about if I had to take my shotgun outside at night and found a nice barrel mount on the sportsmans guide site for a light and found a 120 lumen coleman LED flashlight from wal-mart and now can see exactly what I am looking at when I go outside.   Its the most important thing to me to know what I am looking at when I am holding my gun, I had to go outside one night around 1:00 am when 3 drunken visitors came by. I first heard them sober up their voice real quick and mentioned to each other about my gun and then I hit 'em in the face with a full spotlight beam. Shrunk them eye pupils up real nice  ;D I asked 'em what they were doing here and then told 'em to get out. As Crocodile Mick said, just some kids out havng fun though. Between the sight of my rifle, the spotlight and a grown man standing in only his undershorts in the 20 degree weather, it made a lasting impression on them for sure as they have not been back!   Appreciated the report, thanks   .DT

Most interesting,  i certainly care.  have been wondering (hunting type purposes) about slugs vs buckshot.

mainly for the ability to safely run buck through a full or X full choke i normally keep in my gun, for instance

if i was out hunting birds with a load of 7&1/2 and bumped into a coyote.....well you see the delema...

thanks for sharing
