I'm looking for a good HUNTING bullet...
« on: July 06, 2012, 04:49:55 AM »
Hello guys,
I have a Glock 20 10mm W/ 6" KKM and 5.5" LW barrel and I would like to shoot cast bullets. But I will be hunting with it, so I don't want a RN or "target" profile. a Wide Flat Nose style would be best and a weight of 180-210 grs. My conserns are feeding, this profile is not "best" for reliable feeding in a semi.

I could purchase them (If I find some) but I am thinking casting them my self might be better as I need a large quantity and I have lino type from a past life as a Lithographer... ;) (I have cast my own slugs/sinkers/Jig heads for years.)

SO any suggestions on a bullet, manufacture or a mold, you have used or seen used to good success.

Thank you,
 CW

PS, I'll be on VK for a week or so and will not be able to comment but look forward to the suggestions when I return. (NO internet or cell service)

Talk with Veral either in person or no his forum here. He can make you up a 180 or 200 grain as you prefer using his nose profile that should be about perfect for the job.

Ive been using the 180 lee my guns for years. My old 610 accounted for a couple hogs with that bullet and it killed well. I detest lee 2 cavity molds but there 6 cav are decent molds that will crank out alot of bullets fast. that 180 mold is one of only a few lee designs thats worked well for me over the years.

I have a 2 cavity Lyman mold (401633) for that casts a truncated cone flatpoint at a nominal 200 grains.  It's in excellent condition and I have no use for it ( it came from an estate deal).  If you're interested shoot me a PM.

To test your load and bullet i used wet sand many years ago in a gravel pit after the rain.  This will give you an idea on the bullet and what its doing.  One gallon water jugs works too as a second test.

Thanks Tom!!

Guys I have bought this mold from Tom and received it yesterday. Almost forgot to order the top punch!! LOL

Tonight I cast about 400 bullets with the mold!!

1911,
I haven't tried to use soft sand before! Good idea... I use gallon milk jugs and water.. they are cheap, I have neighbors on all sides save them for me.. momma ain't none too happy as they take up some room, but one shot takes out 3-6 depending on loadings... Thanks for the tip!

Any more comments MUCH appreciated!!
