Decapping & Repriming 12 Ga. Brass Shotshells
« on: July 09, 2012, 02:29:56 AM »
How do yall decap & reprime your brass shotshells ? They use pistol primers, and I can't remember now how I used to deprime and reprime. Boy, it's bad when the ole memory starts going. Sometimes, my memory is like the ole battery ad, it just keeps going and going. It ain't no fun.

Thanks as always,

The easiest way is to get an RCBS cowboy die set and mount it in a press that will accept it (needs the removable die reducer bushing in it).

You can also buy just the 12 G shell holder separately and install it in any standard press that takes standard shell holders. You wont be able to do any depriming or resizing with said setup, but it will allow you to reprime anyway.

You can de-prime with a screwdriver with the nose ground down to fit the flash hols and a hammer to tap it. A spare LEE decapping rod should work just as well. You will need a wooden block with a hole drilled in it to rest the hull on and clear the primer.

Rocky Mountain Cartridges sells a nifty-looking set of tools to do the job.  No personal experience, but Mr. Hubel swears by their products, so that's be good enough for me.

I have the deprime/reprise tool set from RMC. Like all of their stuff, it is top shelf.
Those tools, however, are for RMC brass hulls which use 209 primers.
To deprime hulls that use large pistol primers, is use the deprime rod from a Lee loader. I reprime with one of the old "nutcracker" tools that are often available on eBay.
