I assume I need a new firing pin? UPDATED
« on: July 09, 2012, 10:23:21 AM »
tried to sight in the .243 I picked up last week... first round went "click". had a small indentation in the back... second round went boom... thrird round went boom...then the next 2 went click....?????

went inside and got some different brand ammo...and same thing. click, click, click. like I said above, you can see where the pin had hit the back but I guess not hard enough

With your action open and unloaded, of course, check your firing pin by pulling the trigger all the way back and push the hammer as far forward as it will go. Observe the firing pin protrusion. If it is sticking out a 1/16" or so, it is not your firing pin. But if not then you may have a defective firing pin. More than likely it is the hammer spring, you can get those and it is a common problem.

The first thing to be sure is to make sure you pull the trigger all the way to the rear each time, that alone can allow a marginal transfer bar to drop during the trigger pull as it breaks. Weak hammer springs and bad transfer bars, bent/gummed up firing pins are all common problems, there's tons of info in the FAQs on misfires and FTFs(failure to fire). Could also be excess headspace from too deep a chamber or handloads that have the shoulder pushed back to far creating excess headspace.

need help..have more info now....243 going "click"

posted a thread yesterday about a .243 I have misfiring...

I looked at the firing pin and it sticks out just as far as my other handi rifle in .243

I took my other .243 out today and I shot all 5 of the rounds out of it that I tried to shoot out of the one thats misfiring... without a problem. the indentation is much deeper and bigger with this one, and in the dead center. the one thats misfiring is slightly off center and not that deep...basically not hitting with enough force... would that be the hammer spring like someone mentioned yesterday?

also the extractor is tight... rubs against the botton of the case making it hard to remove and insert...any ideas there too?... thanks ahead!

Extractor help can be found in the FAQs, see the simple extractor improvement, same for the misfires as I said before, there's lots of help there, just a matter of determining what the problem is, we can't do that for you, you'll have to work thru it a step at a time doing the easier stuff first that doesn't require replacing parts, but replacing the hammer spring with a Wolff extra power spring(FAQs) is a good place to start if you're gonna do surgery. H&R will also repair it which is always an option, you'd need to call H&R and get a repair authorization which is covered on the H&R website.

Sure sounds like the old 'transfer bar' problem to me.
