Boar kill
« on: July 09, 2012, 12:48:18 PM »
Here is a boar that I shot on a hunt that I just came back from. I shot him with Hornady Superformance GMX 150 grain ammo out of my 30-06, and must say that I was quite impressed with its performance.

I'm not sure what he weighed kynardsj, as there was no weight scale. I do know that he was very heavy and it took two men to load him on the back of a 4 wheeler. The taxidermist that I took him to said the head was very large and would need a large form.

Nice hog!!!!  Great job!!!

I use the chest heart ratio measurement that is published in TX Boars.com.  It's really accurate.  You measure around the chest, just under the front legs.  A 40"measurement equals 200lbs, 50" is 300. Each 1" increment = 10lbs so a 45" chest/heart measurement is 250lbs.  It's accurate to within 10lbs.

Won more than a few bets this way!   8)

Thank you very much for the weight formula drdougrx; I will be sure to remember it for the next time that I shoot another hog.
RevJim, I shot the hog in southern Ohio on a preserve that I go to several times a year. The strange part is that I had opportunities to hunt hogs year round when I lived in Texas, but I never did. I would see them while I was deer hunting and would pass on them, but since I moved to Ohio 7 years ago I got the itch to start hog and exotic hunting and have been ever since. There are said to be free ranging wild hogs coming into the state, but they are far and few between. Hunting on preserves works better for me anyways because of my work schedule.

I like hunting the preserves also, for both hog and exotics. Time is always a factor.
