I finally got down into the man cave the last few days and loaded up some 50-140's.
At the risk of repeating myself:
Six were loaded with cast bullets dropped from the RCBS 50-450 FN mould I bought here on the classifieds. It cast great bullets from the get-go. Cast from WW's, they measured .512 as cast and weighed 473 gr. lubed. With a light crimp in the crimp groove they slip right in the chamber.
Three more were loaded with Barnes' 450 gr. JFN bullets. With their .032 jackets and pure lead cores they ought to work well on deer sized critters!
I loaded both with a charge of 5744 that should give me about 2K fps. A cat sneeze load for sure in this cartridge, and I hope it will be enough for our smallish Jawja whitetails.
From my research and Tim's 'speramentin it isn't going to be any problem exceeding the ballistics of the 500 NE with the Hornady 570 gr. DGX and DGS bullets I have,
but I'm saving those for Africa!
I sure hope one or the other of the two loads shoot well since I don't have much time for development before deer season.
I'm off work tomorrow for another Dr's appointment in the morning, so maybe I can get to the range in the afternoon.
Got to do some scope switchin tonight though. I got the steel mount and I hope I have some steel rings. If I don't I'll use Signature Z's into which I'll slip a Leupold 2.5 Compact scope!
Oh! I was so proud of them loads I took a picture!
I'll post it when I get home.
