Okay...  ::)

I left a message for JES a few minutes ago, the check is signed and the envelope addressed and stamped.  I should remember to post it this week, but no promises...  ;)

Okay, the only things I have to do now is to find tomorrows Doctor's appointment notes, get the hearing calender ready for the morning, and get to the poles before they close...  :-\   Oh! and mail the check!!   ;D

Naw Tim, I'm sorry I slowed the process down as much as I did.   :-[  Poor ol' LongTom must be chompin' at the bit.   :(

But it's all the the hands of Ben Franklin's boys now.   :)

Hi-ebber, and day always be a hi-ebber..., I now have another problem.  Remember that beautiful walnut stock and fore end I got for my 450 Sharps Express?  Well naturally the cheek piece is for a right handed shooter.  Pretty useless for me now...  ::)  So I guess I'll go back to the first stock I had for the big 45 and use it for playing around with that rifle and the 50-140.   :(  I'm still going to work on the walnut set as who knows, I might get the sight back in my right eye!   :)

See what you started by coming back Tyler!?   ;D

No sweat Richard, works for me, I'm sure LT will forgive ya!  ;) Maybe you can rework that stock to make it ambidextrous? I've seen some pretty good woodwork done here, maybe someone will offer some help or maybe even do it for ya!  8)

Hey Richard, no problem on my end.
I ain't really in any big hurry.
I haven't gotten any bullets or a set of dies for it yet.
You have had more important things to contend with.
That comes first, the barrel can wait.

Tim:
With that 1 in 20 twist that Jes is using, what is the lightest bullets that will stabilise in it and at what speeds?

Hey Frank, like I told Tim, I've got a set of dies thanks to Tom.  We can pass those around until the money drain from the barrel and componants wears off.   ;)

And Tim!  Speaking of throats, Do you know if JES is cutting them for lng bullets?   ???

LT, the JBM stability calculator says the 1:20" twist will stabilize a 700gr bullet very well, the 700gr Ranger Rick has a stability value of 1.9, the military uses 1.5.

Richard, I'm pretty sure the reamer cuts a throat for typical 50-140 bullets ~500-700gr, but if you want to shoot those long 50BMG bullets you could always rent a 50BMG throater, I'd check with Fred first tho just to make sure it would work in the 50-140.  ;D

Talked to Jesse today on the phone, nice man, he told me the 1 in 20 twist would be good for anywhere from 300gr bullets on up at 1200 fps up to any speed I could push them.
Say a 300 or 350 gr SP running about 2400 to 2600, man what a flat shooting big bore deer gun!
He also said they would indeed take the big 700 grainers you all seem to want to shoot.
Not me, I will stick with the lighter ones for what I want to do.

LT,

Your 45-120 will push a 350 grainer @ 2600+ FPS with less powder and a better BC.  There might be a tad more chamber pressure though. ::)

I am hoping I can get them both to around that speed with good groupings.
I feel the 120 will be a little more forgiving as far as loads go but there is something about a big 50 that just begs to be played with.
Only difference between myself and other members is I like to shoot light for caliber if the gun likes it.
As long as the bullet load combo will do the job intended then I like the flatter trajectory of the lighter bullets, less estatemate for hold over at the longer distances.

I know LT!   ;D   I was looking up loads last night.   ;)   Got to get me some bullets first.  I was looking at the CastPerformance .511 WFNGC's.  I'd like to play around a little before I ask Veral to make me a mould!   ;)

I needed a Lee .358" bullet sizer to modify for sizing .375" jacketed bullets to .366",  so I added some .515" Montana Precision 365gr for break-in, figured a little flitz "lube" will speed up the process! ;D  The cast bullets got me over the $25 min order requirement.  ;D

WOOO-HOOO
The barrel arrived today!
Look great.
New 50-140 jamison brass slid right in, nice and flush.
Installed the barrel back on the frame, slid the brass back in and she closed up nice and tight just as before when it was brand new.
Opened it up and the brass came right out with no drag. (extractor)
I think this is going to be fun!!!  :) ;) ;D
Good job Jess and thanks!!!

As most of you know I like shooting lite for caliber when the gun likes it.
For this 50-140 I was hoping to shoot from 300gr to 450gr max, if the gun likes them that is.
I also like jacketed bullets.
My question is where to find .512 jacketed bullets.
I was looking at HAWK brand but they are sized at either .510 or .515.
They say their jackets are made extreamly soft to expand with the bullet on impact but that they also will expand to the bore when fired.
Not sure which to try.
Hope the .510 bumps up or squeezing the .515 down to .512 on fireing?
Any thoughts.

I slugged the bore of mine, first with a .535" round ball, as near as I can tell, groove depth is ~.510"ish, real hard to measure tho, I wrapped a .0025" feeler gauge blade around it to get a measurement of .515" then subtracted .005" for .510". I also drove a .510" 300gr Barnes into the muzzle part way in, the bullet actually measures .509", the grooves left marks between most of the lands meaning the bullet wasn't quite square in the muzzle probably or the one groove was slightly deeper than the others. I'll get the .515" cast bullets tomorrow and let ya know if they'll chamber.

As for shooting .515" jacketed bullets in a .512" barrel, as long as they'll chamber, they should work fine, I've shot .2835"(7mm) bullet in my overbore 270 Ackley Handi which slugs .2795" in the groove, just have to work the load up to deal with the increased pressure of the slightly larger bullet. Remember the member here that had his 243 Handi at the range and his friend loaded it with a 7.62x39 round accidently and fired it? It fired with no catastrophic failure, just created a lot of pressure, but the bullet went down the bore, it did lock it up so they couldn't open the action which wasn't damaged after H&R inspected it, underlug was toast tho, they replaced the barrel at the owner's cost and returned it to him.

I might just get a small sampling of each and see which it likes.
Of course as it is broke in it's likes may change.
Just have to play with it some and find out!

Do you guys believe the 70% to the base of the bullet range with Trail Boss is still a safe formula for the 50-140?   ???

Listed below we show a few examples of such loads throughout the Reloading Data Center, but the fun doesn't stop there. If you don't see Trail Boss data for your favorite cartridge we have a formula for developing loads for all cartridges and it's simple to follow. This formula may be used in both rifle and pistol applications:
