I have never understood this pheonomenon, so I will ask for your imput..

Why in the world can't some folks do anything without having noise around ? I have worked in places where they had music piped in 24/7..why ?
I call some firm or even some individuals..and I have to listen to music while I'm waiting..some of which is really a raucous cacophany..so I sit there waiting with the phone a foot from my ear, waiting for a human voice..
Years ago, due to an injury, I had to have an MRI done ..so I was sent into a metal & plastic tunnel for what... 45 min to an hour ? As soon as I was sardined in ..the music/noise started.. In a couple minutes the attendant asked if there was anything else she could do for me..I said, "yes, you can cut off that noise"! She seemed surprised.
It seems like we can hardly go to any public place without being bombarded with incessant noise.

What is this..an addiction I never fell victim of ? ...Please, help me to understand..

I will help you, Ironglow - music is a pleasant thing to hear for a lot of propel. Has nothing to do with addiction or inability to do without music... It's just pleasant.

a lot of people are afraid to be alone with their own thoughts and use some kind of noise as a distraction.most people are just afraid to be alone at all and the music makes them feel like there is someone else there with them.thats just my opinion for what its worth.
i do listen to talk radio some as i like to hear others veiws and opinions and also get information.music really hasnt done anything for me since i was bout 25.

As far as the crappy music while we are on hold....I kind of like it. It lets me know the automated system didn't hang up on me while I was on hold for 20 minutes waiting to speak to someone in India.

I personally like to have SOME kind of noise in my workplace. Without music/a fan/anything....the voices....i mean tinnitis gets pretty bad and I can't concentrate. I don't want something so loud it interferes with my coworkers' peace and quiet, but a little something sure seems to help.

go to a party to socialize.....and you can't hears what any one has to say

some times alone i listen to TV or talk radio

if i am with a friend ...i want to hear what they have to say
and hope they want to hear what i have to say.....

i do hate noise.......tho i do sleep better with my noisy ceining fan going

The MRI technician told me many people feel claustrophobic during the MRI. The music drowns out the noise of the machine and helps to calm them.

I'm with you!To me it's a distraction. If I'm sitting in the Dr's office waiting to see him or her, I want to be able to hear the screams or laughter coming from the exam rooms.They never play the kind of music I like. You put 5 people in one room and they will all like a different kind of music. I've never heard of one elevator song making it into the top ten.If they really wanted to calm you in that terror tunnel (MRI), they would have a nice looking nurse caress your forehead or hold your hand

Depends on the kind of music. Country,old rock and roll, easy listening, I can tollerate. Jazz or blues, if it's not real loud. No new rock, or rap. I guess that wherever your at, their just trying to relax you. gypsyman

Sometimes quiet is disconcerting. I remember once, many years ago... Asleep in my rack on a destroyer.... Suddenly I was awake, wide awake, with a feeling of alarm.... And then the alarms spent off. There was a casualty in the steam plant and we'd lost power... The lack of noise from blowers had woke me up.

Thanks for the replies guys, it has really clarified some questions I had.
I am relieved though, not one of you said it was great to "drown out the voices in my head"..LOL

Next question I suppose is; Why do some folks play music so LOUD...I mean painfully loud, even to their neighbors or people near their car. I have been parked at a traffic light and had some car stop nearby with a radio so noisy that it rocked my car.
This can't be comfortable..even for the transgressor..why do they do it ? Do they know it is so irritating..do they even care ?

Considering that the type of music I like is not very likely to be played, I like the silence.

What gets me is the repeat recordings that say something like "
Your call is important to us, someone will be with you shortly." or similar. After 5 minutes I am about fed up.

Dammit IF my call was so important to you, you would hire more people to answer the $%^&*!! phone.

I guess I have to count myself among those who prefer the silence of the deerstand, squirrel watch or riverbank..because as you guys know..it is not complete silence, squirrels chip at each other , the hawk or eagle screams over the mile long swamp ..a bass breaks the water.
I must admit though, this is perhaps because I am not sensitive to music..can't carry a tune in a bucket..

In have no musical talent whatsoever but I do recognize good music when I hear it.
I've made a sudden 180 to the exit more then once in a restaurant because of the "noise"or volume coming out of the speakers. Yep, noisy kids will do the same for me.

I was going to go on a tirade about how I prefer absolute tomb-like silence, but then I remembered that I always play podcasts in the kitchen and almost always have a podcast or music on while I'm driving. (The rest of the time, I like it quiet, though).

Not to derail the thread too much, but my wife wanted to try going to a Cracker Barrel restaurant (chain in the South) so we stopped at the on in Bowling Green on our last road trip. We got to the dining room and I stopped and sasked her if it was going to be too loud because it was a really loud place. She agreed and we walked out. I am not going to a restaurant where you can hardly hear your companion. Chipotle grill is like that too. Just a trough.

GAAA,, GRRRRR ! you walk into a seemingly nice and quiet place. You sit down place your order and just about then some yokel gets up and puts a number of quarters into that @#$% Jukebox and all hell breaks loose.

I think the modern juke box can be found in places like McDonalds. I read that some of the fast food joints specifically play music that is irritating so that people will leave promptly after they eat. Other places like Chipotle grill use angular sheet metal that creates a staccato environment that sounds like a busy factory. They do that to get rid of people too.

I suppose they have "done the math", but it seems like some of those joints who drive folks out..will also keep a sizeable number from even coming in..

I have tinnitus pretty bad so I appreciate background noise. I have to sleep with the radio on at night, the ringing is brutal if there is no background noise.

That being said, I love the quiet of the woods when I'm hunting. I like a slight breeze just to drown out the tinnitus but there is nothing like the sounds you hear in the woods. I'll take that over someone's crappy background music any day.

Since I work in a factory there is a lot of noise anyway. Right now the 2 guys with radios play the same station, and it is usually rock that I like, at least for a while. I used to have the boss and one employee who like BOTH kinds of music, country AND western; different stations and I usually was in the middle where I could hear both. My preference is for "hillbilly". Given a choice, I would listen to a mix of rock, folk, and oddities.

When at home the wife has the TV on, her choice. I just need some silence after all day at work. The in the woods scenario has a whole different aspect. Actually, at times the range is quiet and peaceful. And I have fond memories associated with gunsmoke and such.
