Ordered a 9mm barrel from MGM
« on: July 10, 2012, 04:15:25 PM »
Matte finish
16.5"
Shilen blank
9x19 chamber
Threaded muzzle 1/2x28

You guys can probably see where this is going. But I imagine this bbl will be pretty entertaining even before the NFA goodies.

My question is have any of you guys done much accuracy testing with a pistol caliber MGM barrel and if so what were your results?

I have threaded 16.5" barrels from MGM in 357 max and 300 AAC Blackout.  Both are very accurate (1"-1 1/2") barrels at 100 yards.  I use both for varmints and armadillos around the house but would use either for deer in Oklahoma.

If your going for silence why not go with .45 ACP?  If you use 9mm you'll have to use subsonic ammo.

I have a 20 " MGM in 45 LC. With hot Hornady 240 and 250 gr XTP's it's the best shooting Encore barrel I have ever owned.

I handload so on pure cost 9mm wins. Brass is free and bullets cost half of what they do for 45. I'm already setup to load 9mm and I have a bit broader selection of suppressors to choose from.

Yes ill have to stay under 1100 for really quiet shooting but that's just another load workup.

Thanks for the input fellas. Your replies are really making me anxious for this bbl to arrive.

I barrelled my Ruger 77 Mark II rifle with a bull barrel in .45ACP. Fun at 25" long but heavy as a railroad tie. Cut it back to 17" and balances much better. It was cheap for me to buy a Green Mtn. blank and fit it myself but I've always thought about pistol rounds in rifle/carbine barrels as a fun thing to do. The Contender is the way to go because my Ruger is a slow to feed manually rig. I had no intentions of makeing the magazine work for this experiment.
Even at 25" long the 45ACP still makes a good muzzle report: not a BLAST but too loud to call it a '45 CB cap' round! A Contender with a suppressor should be fun. I'm considering the same for my 18" MGM barrel in .357 Maximum I just bought here on GB. Gonna shoot it as is first.

Should be lots of fun. I've got a suppressed 9mm bolt action rifle that makes an air gun sound loud. I haven't shot it beyond 25 yds yet so I can't comment on accuracy. But it's always a popular one at the range.

A 9mm or .357 Contender has been on the wish list for some time now. It'll happen some time.

Correct.  I had a Destroyer rebarreled to 9x19.  Had to play with mags to get the shorter round to feed, but it does pretty well now.

That Destroyer is too cool.
