The actors and actresses of that generation did what they thought was best for the nation, not what was best for themselves, like the current crop.

A couple that quickly come to mind are:
 Lee Marvin

 Eddie Albert

Rod Serling, Henry Fonda, Jimmy Stewart, there were quite a few others I just can't recall at the moment.

My quandary, I personally, don't think I have enough Handi's but, I know I have more Handi's than I really need or should have.

Bob Keeshan was the name and the medals story is an urban legand based on another urban legand about Lee Marvin at Iwo Jima, which didn't happen because Marvin was recovering from wounds obtained at Saipan when Iwo was invaded.

The old actors still served their country well.  Those who didn't have to serve, entertained the troops and did so after the war.  Like Bob Hope.  Audie Murphy won the Medal of Honor and made some movies after the war.

Here is a list.  Lots of them.  All these were good and you could remember them if you are over 50.
