Texas woman accused of $179,596 in skipped tolls, among 25,000 deadbeat drivers     By Justin Hyde | Motoramic – 9 hours agoIf you've ever driven around Dallas, chances are you've paid a vig to the North Texas Toll Authority, an agency that builds roads, tunnels and bridges using fees collected from drivers. But since the NTTA lacks police powers, it's had trouble collecting tolls that went unpaid -- and today, turned to naming and shaming 25,000 of its worst offenders. The surprise? Twenty-two drivers owe more than $100,000 in unpaid tolls and penalties -- with the list topped by a Dallas woman whose bill stands at $179,596.43. That's a Texas-sized bill in any state.
To break into the NTTA's list, one needed a minimum of 100 unpaid tolls, no response to bills and several notices after six months and at least $2,575 in back fees. The top offender, identified by the NTTA as one Amber Young of Dallas, supposedly sped through the toll booths 8,366 times without payment, with her total including some level of penalties the NTTA didn't disclose. The NTTA said last year about 3 percent of users were dodging about $13 million in tolls, and that a previous drive to publish the names of the worst offenders brought out more response than any other tactic.
NTTA drew its list by taking photos of license plates when a vehicle runs through its electronic toll gates without a valid transponder, then matches the plate to the registered owner of the vehicle. It also warns that the offenders on the list run the risk of a criminal citation -- and the NTTA now says it will start pursuing the worst offenders in civil court as well.
But the NTTA doesn't have a sterling record of matching offenders or warning those who fall behind. There's often mismatches between the address tied to a license plate or vehicle and who's actually driving; all those ex-es living in Texas don't necessarily care if the former spouse kept the toll bill up to date. There's several complaints on the NTTA's Facebook page about hundreds of dollars in fees suddenly appearing because the NTTA had bad contact information. Two years ago, a Fort Worth woman spent a day in jail because of a NTTA fine she didn't know about that had grown into a bench warrant for a missed court date.
The NTTA was created by Texas lawmakers to pay for roads without raising taxes by charging the people who actually used them, a system that's growing in many congested cities around the nation. If the NTTA's trick works well, expect other toll agencies to consider their own version of Texas justice.

  • I feel much better now knowing it will get worse.
This is similar to photo radar. The owner gets the ticket and not the driver.  I never liked it.

She and others are apparently telling the authorities that the law  does not apply to them. I hope they are all jailed and fined heavily, or the State refund $ to all those that have obeyed the law. It's not like they don't know the law and they have been warned. Time for talking is over with. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

I disagree. The taxpayers had to foot the bill for these so called "toll roads". The toll has already been paid. Drivers should have free access. The one by me is rapidly becoming a rich man only toll road. It costs 2 dollars just to drive one exit over in either direction and it seems that they jack the price up higher every year and sometimes twice a year and now they claim they want to sell it to a private company to run.How about returning it to the people that paid to build it in the first place? Toll roads also create another unneeded government bureaucracy. Every toll road in the nation no doubt needs a special commission with unelected politicians to oversee the operation of the road. Eliminate them and eliminate the need for tolls. I hope these people get away with skipping out on the tolls.

Toll roads will become ubiquitous in the future.  Why?  Because then they can track many people's movements.

How could a life time of driving on a road cost someone $100,000...

Frankly, I'd have to skip the tolls too.....

Dunno guys, what about all the drivers who obey the law and pay?? Years ago Our Ohio river bridge was a toll bridge til it was paid for then dropped. Thats the way it should work. Remember the guy in England who manned the parking lot gate for 20 + years then one day didn't show up for work?? Nobody had hired him, he made a good living. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

The sad parts of this is that a. Some of these items never ever get paid for whatever reason and

b. In some case the bridge or road has been " sold"  to foreign financial interests I.E.  the Interstate 401 bypass in Toronto/Ontario is foreign "property" now.

It seems like they told that story about the Turnpike here once too. "Once the road has been paid for by tolls it will be opened up for free travel!" Well some 50 years later it is still a toll road that becomes more expensive by the day to drive on, and once they created "The Turnpike Commision" that ensured it would be a Toll Road forever because government never downsizes.

I lived in PA in the late 50th. The PA Turnpike was well in existence then and it is still a Toll road as far as I know. There is never an end.

all it takes is a smart tag and a reader set up , even in a police car. But why bother a cell phone will do it to.

Yep...Pay a toll to get on the road. Go too fast and pay another toll. Stop for fuel pay another toll. Renew vehicle registration pay another toll. Go to work and slave away all day long and pay another toll. Buy a house and property and pay another toll. Buy a new car pay another toll. Drop dead and pay another toll. I am surprised they havent found a way to collect yearly tolls for the plot of dirt people are buried in.
