Thompson/Center unchained
« on: July 13, 2012, 10:07:30 AM »
This is the original 56 smooth bore, I kept the barrel,  the stock went away.

It now is on a two trigger stock.

This is the other barrel, now a Hawken smoothie.  The SB barrels don't say Renegade or Hawken, just Thompson/Center.

Back in the day these were fowlers or foraging guns.

She looks good, and I'm glad your satisfied.  Good luck with it.  I only took that barrel out a couple times for shot load development, and only played around in the 55-65 gr load range with 2f, and 65-70gr measure of 6's.  I think it would be a dandy of a small game getter out to 25 yards or so.  I was surprised at how effective on paper, to be totally honest.  Again, good luck.

I don't know what it is about the .56 SB but I really like them too. Somehow I wound up with 3 of them.  ;D I have thought about making one into a modern version of a canoe gun.

This one is gone too. The stock now hosts a 62 smooth. See next page.
That should be the final [!] version.

Hawken stock. PennHunter barrel. PennHawken
« Reply #6 on: July 26, 2012, 04:21:09 PM »
Short all-octagon PennHunter barrel on a virgin Hawken stock. The under-rib has to be shortened  for this combo.

When I built the BlackHawken I used a half-round WhiteMountian barrel. You need to shorten the front about two inches to meet the octagon section. Most PennHunter barrels are half-round, but since this one is full octagon I didn't need to shorten the forend.

T/C never made a Hawken carbine, so you have to make your own.

After a lot of twists and turns I finally assembled a Renegade Hunter 58. Green Mountian barrel with T/C sights. This Hunter stock is some nice lookin wood.

This is now my longest T/C, at 32inchs. The rock-lock Penn is 31.

The 54 White Mountian Carbine is unusal even rare.
This is a very popular hunter. Butt pad for comfort,
half-round barrel for less weight. 50s are common,
54s are not. I think a 45 was also made but I haven't
seen one.

Enjoyed the pics and posts, mixing and matching T/C's pieces and parts looks like a good time. I kick myself for not holding onto a .50 white mt and a .45 seneca that passed through my hands years ago... Thanks for rubbing it in:-)

Both Senecas are done now. I may refinish the 36, a few dings need to be raised. The 45 started as a pile of parts, looks good now.

I did refinish the 36. First I swapped barrels, its now the 45. I was able to raise about a dozen or more dings. Stripping the finish on this one was more difficult than usual. Its been on there a long time.  Above, you can see some of the dents in the picture [36] around the lock. They all came out. Here it is :

The stand? Yes and no. An old friend, now passed, built the top for a tabletop display at gun shows. He gave it to me and I added the legs.

Just for plain 'ol shootin I prefer the Renegade or New Englander. No cheek piece and a flat butt. Much more comfortable.

A WhiteMountian 50 and a NewEnglander 54. The barrels ends on these were damaged, thus removed .
Contender front sights. I have only fired the WM and it doesn't shoot much differently than the full length.
When the snow melts away I should chrono it compared to the original.

The Cherokees are here. A plainer version of the Seneca, they didnt sell as well.  That has made them a bit more precious. The 45 arrived in nearly new condition. Only needed a maintenience cleaning.  The 32 is a kit rifle and will get some dings raised. The metal on it is either factory or pro blue, looks good.

A  32 hole is mighty small.

Some of the kit rifles were factory blued.

they couldn't warranty guns/parts when they had no control over processes used in finishin' so they started bluin' all kits after a bit.

A side-hammer to bring home the high quality protien needed by an active family.
The 50 caliber barrel is a 1-48 twist to stabilize big maxis or powerbelts.
The one inch barrel can handle big loads of FFF.
Twenty one inchs long, the barrel is easy to handle in the brush and six inchs lighter.
Dual triggers can be set for the light pull or may be used singlely.
The CVA trigger guard hasn't got an annoying spur.
The butt has a WhiteMountian pad covered by the Oktober Country boot sling.
Ramrod looks like hickory but is tough carbon fiber.
The low gloss 'wonder rub' finish isn't affected by water and easy to touch up after field use.
A plain efficent rifle for one shot results.

looks good as usual. if t/c had you in their p/r, advertising, or think-tank they'd probably still be makin' side hammers.
