Just for fun - it seems like there is some interest in the 17 Hornet so let's see who is ready to part with some money (pretty safe bet since there isn't anything to buy anyway!)

I'm having one made up from a .17 HMR barrel but I'd still be tempted to buy a whole new rifle in this caliber if one were offered.  After all I have twin grandsons and when I get too old to shoot, they're getting them all...

Thats why Im here;  just joined forum to vote on this.  Looking at getting a hmr and converting it, would be easier to send gun in, First I need a sb2, have a 22mag that I really like.  just bought a 223bbl for optima elite, 243,50 combo rifle.  but that is bigger money than handi.  barrel alone cost near a complete h&r.  yes on barrel

I don't know, but when you see a company that no longer wants or cares to innovate or come out with new products it's kind of like that old saying about "reading the writing on the wall" and that writing has been going on for a while now.

Maybe it's easier for them to not have too many calibers and make it too complicated when they turn it over to the Chinese.
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

The H&R division turned a loss last year since sales was down.
Their management is probably under the gun/microscope to get them profitable.
Doubt seriously that they're going to take the chance on a new caliber with a limited market in tough economic times.

While I would like to have a .17 Hornet, I think H&R has expanded their offerings too much.  They need to cut back and stick with the old tried and true sellers.  .223, 25-06,30-30, 30-06, .35 Whelen, and the 45-70.  Yes I know the .35 Whelen has problems, but it fills a nitch in many Southern states.

I would like to see a 7MM Mag, and a .300 Mag, but I know that will never happen.  too much research and development to beef up the frame, and locking parts.

I already have four 17's!

A M2, a HMR, a Hornady hornet and a fireball... Never was a fan of lite fast bullets... At least. It on big game. ;)

Love these little fellers, fast flat shooting and accurate! At the ranges I shoot (under 150 yards) them at wind makes no difference.

The fireball and Hornady hornet have yet to draw blood but I have killed coyotes with the HMR just as dead as any caliber I use. (with in said 150 yards)

I had to get one the hard way.  I bought a HMR barrel and I'm having it reamed to .17 Hornet.  I'd probably still buy a whole rifle if they come available.  I have twin grandsons and I'd likely give one to each of them at some point.

Anybody on here have a reamer for the hornet yet? Just picked a 17hmr sportster and want to do the conversion fairly soon. Already checked its fit on my sb2 receiver and its perfect. I have access to lathes but if somebody will do the work reasonably i would send off my barrel since its hard to get my machinist buddies to do side stuff.

Just saw this question... sorry for the late answer... Dlask Arms in British Columbia, Canada did the reaming, using my reamer and gauges. These guns have been sold... for a stupid amount of money (to guys that just couldn't wait)... I gotta say, I prefer our K-Hornets with 35 grain V-Max and Lil' Gun. If someone has a Hornet barrel, they would be further ahead to ream to K-Hornet and shoot the 35 VM's.
From Hodgdon website;
.22 K-Hornet with 35 V-Max and 13.5 grains Lil' Gun = 3122 fps & 758 ft/lb
.17 Hornet with 25 V-Max and 8.9 grains Lil' Gun = 3195 fps & 567 ft/lb
Hoyt Handi's; Ultra Black .22 K-Hornet Shorty, Black Synthetic K-Hornet Shorty & Nickel .410 Combo (sons), Ultra Granite Grey .22 BR Rem, Ultra Nutmeg .223 & .30/30 Shorty Combo (sons), Ultra Forest .223/7mm-08 Shorty Combo, Ultra Forest .243/.308 Combo, Ultra Nutmeg .243/.308 Combo (sons),  Jacaranda/Cocobolo .30/30 & 7.62X39 Shorty Combo, Ultra Black/Stainless .260 Rem Stub, Ultra Black/Stainless .338 Federal Stub,  Ultra Grey .358 Win, Ultra Grey .35 Whelen, Walnut/Cocobolo Mannlicher .357 MAX, Buffalo Classic Mannlicher .44 Mag Shorties w/NDS-38 peeps (X2; Sons & mine), Ultra Grey Stainless .45/70 & .243 & 20 Gauge Combo, Buffalo Classic 26" .45/70, 9.3X74R Mannlicher, Synthetic Nickel .410 & .30/30 & Versa Pak .22 LR Shorty Combo, Ultra Forest/Cocobolo 12 Gauge 3.5" Turkey; Most scoped with DNZ or Dura Sight one-piece bases and Mueller, Hawke or Nikon scopes... several with Skinner Peeps and Williams Fire Sight ramps.

Maybe I'm just being silly.  I have 2 .22 K-Hornets (neither of them a Handi) but I still wanted a .17 Hornet so I'm getting one made up from a .17 HMR barrel.  I would have rather ordered one from H&R if they'd only make them.

BTDT... ruined two perfectly good Hummer barrels!  :'(
More than got my money out of them though, so all is good... as I said, if you have K-Hornet the 17HH is kinda redundant... but so are most of our guns, when a .223 and .308 cover everything we could ever need... good luck with your project... ours shot very well... just not as well as the K's with 35VM's.

I didn't need the .22 K-Hornet either since I have a couple .223's.  I would have stopped buying guns long ago if I only bought what I needed.  I suppose if I don't like the .17 Hornet, I could always trade it off.

.224 is about as small as I want to reload.  I hate loading dinky bullets.  My "Dinky Scale" is anything less than 7mm ::)   I like to load .308 plus.  Also, the dinkies don't give me the satisfying roar the of the big guys ;)   Therefore, I have no interest in the 17s.  I had a 17HMR and sold it.

Yeah Hoyt, I can load the straight walls all day and enjoy it.  Carbide dies, no lube.  It's Like heaven.  That's why I don't get into wildcats with re-sizing, fire forming, annealing, trimming, etc.  As said before.....I'm old and lazy.  Get it loaded...make it go bang...hit what yer shootin' at.  That's about it.

Maybe they should take a  page from their parent company Remington.  Make a limited run of a special or discontinued caliber every year, with fancier wood, a medallion in the stock, or a little fancier receiver (like the BC).  Bet they would sell.  I would be standing in line to buy, a 7x57mm "Limited Gun", and I would bet so would quite a few others..
