You must be liking those ruger laminated gun stocks..  :o This is the second ugly ruger rifle you have bought with the gray laminated stock. Life is too short to shoot a ugly gun..... In the past most of the guns you posted had nice looking walnut stocks, Why the change?

I see the scope mounted where it's supposed to be. If they shoot straight these scout rifles might be pretty good if the users forget about putting the scope out on the barrel.

I ran a box of Winchester 150 grain Power Points through it yesterday, and it shot about 2 MOA. I think it will do better with handloads and a higher powered scope. The Leupold that's on it has heavy duplex crosshairs and they don't lend themselves to precision shooting.

Now I know this may be rather simple, logical even which is why it was never thought of by the OP  ::)  .


Use a target that is meant for such scopes ..................................... Simples  ;) .


They are available some have Four blocks on then with a cross left bare in the middle and one simply aligns the reticle with the blocks and voila the shots fall into the middle if the scope is set up that is. This is one type I have used in the past:-



The red spot is a price sticker I added as I was trying the factory irons.





This is one I made up on graph paper then got photocopied:-





Trying some cast bullets in a .303 Martini Muscat again with iron sights.


But it gives you the idea of the type of target that works with a heavier reticle. Not all of us like fine reticles as they are a handicap in poor light like dawn and dusk when hunting.

The heavy duplex is a hunters retucle not a target shooters retucle. Unless of course you could take someones advise like Brithunter sugested.  :o But i supose that would be out of the question....  ::)

It would be out of the question for me to take his advise.  It's going to be hard enough not to sell a rifle that won't shoot at least MOA.  I'm hoping that it will at some point in the future.  They heavy duplex scope will either go back to Leupold for a standard duplex or get stuck on a levergun where 100 yard accuracy isn't as big a deal.

I would like one of these rifles.  I like the detatchable mag and the ability to use a scout scope.  With the right ammo and scope you should get 1" MOA with it.  I've also read the laminated stocks are less prone to warpage if you use it in the rain.  Same with the plastic stocks.  Let us know what combo you use to tweek it.

Don't take this advice if you don't want to  but if that rail up front can come off lose it. My M1A Socom shot so so until I took that useless rail off the bbl and put on a standard hand guard then it got rather nice.
scopes , I got a Leupol that has a small red dot in the center of heavy cross hairs that I like alot

I would shoot it with and with out to see what you give up in accy , maybe nothing . But my experince has been anything contacting a bbl can effect accy.
 
But I like light fast guns not gaget magnets ....... ;D

That Scout Rail reminds me of the scope mount on a #1 Ruger, which I know hurts the #1's accuracy bad.  You may be on to something.

I picked up the ruger in a store several mos ago it was ok I didn't like some of the plastic parts but that is the way of the world and not a deal breaker. I didn't notice if the rail was removable or not. As for the lam stock they grow on ya and are good stocks for factory stocks.

I've had mine off.  There are just 4 screws holding it on.   I don't like plastic either but it works well for Glock and others.  The weight savings is likely the reason.  This gun is no featherweight.

After you change your scope and if you still have problems try some different ammo I had a couple of 308s that didn't like super X PP ammo. Maybe it was break in issue's the guns were new and maybe I need to revisit that ammo but swapping ammo made the difference.

Others have said these rifles prefer 165 grain bullets over the 150s.  I know my Model 700 likes 180s much better than 165s.  Every rifle is different.  The bore looks a little rough.  I scrubbed the crap out of it when I got home and it was very dirty.  I had cleaned it before I went to the range since it was new.  It has a tendency to shoot two separate groups, one about 1" over the center of the bull and one about one inch under the center of the bull and a little to the right.  It was hot as the devil, but I was leaving the bolt open and letting the barrel cool between shots.  Of the last 10 rounds at 100 yards three were touching.  The group was about 2 MOA.

Looking good Swampy. I much more prefer a standard placed scope to the scout setup myself. I've had satisfactory results in my XS7 loading 150gr Seirra with Reloader 15, whats your preferred powder for .308   .DT

You see unlike you if I don't know something I will say so straight out. As an example some time back I asked about the models of Remington bolt actions that followed the Model 30 as 721, 725 etc were just numbers to me and I didn't know which came first or last or even when they were made or if they were still based on the Enfield action or not. So I asked ................................... but not you  Oh no you just come out with some crap and we are supposed to swallow it.

A closed mind is a terrable waste..  :o I have found that although some people rub me the wrong way. I can still glean a little knowledge from them, as distasteful as it may be.  ;)

Looks like we may eventually get to meet swampy, My wife & I are buying a place in Central Florida and retiring & moving back to our home state this fall. We will be a ways from where you live but one of our family reunions is held in Panama city each year.
