Ok...some one's going to hate me
« on: July 15, 2012, 07:12:54 AM »
I'm seeing a lot of talk about the Mosin rifles. I really don't think they are all that good looken. So what is the attraction. Is it the ugly girl syndrome? Like the good looken girls, the good looken guns are to hard to get? Ugly guns like ugly girls are fun and cheap! :o
I may have just opened a can of worms and a fire storm with it.

Inexpensive, powerful, decently accurate and very historic. Anytime you can buy such a gun for less than the price of a low end pellet rifle, you have to jump on it!  :)

Let me stick my oar in this one. For what they cost and for what mil surp ammo costs where can you get more bang for your buck?. Having said that I think moisins are way under rated. They may look crude but when it comes
to accuracy I think they will suprise you. You may have to experiment with the different types of mil surp ammo to find one that shoots but the search is well worth it. I've got two. Finn reworked Model 27 and a soviet M44 carbine. The carbine suprised me with its accuracy and if you miss there is always the bayonette. the Finn M27 I only shoot with cast bullets. When the eyes work as they should 2-3" groups at 100yds are easily obtained. That may not sound like much, but a 210gr bullet at 1600fps will still take down a deer. Frank

Ugly girls need love too.   When I had a C&R I picked up an lot of mil-surps, including a 91/30.  It shot pretty good but I let it go with several others and kept my Swedes and Swisses.

I'm a WWII buff and have a pile of milsurps. Some rifles though, the Mosin and Carcano among them, don't interest me for some reason.

A buddy of mine who has multiple examples of every variant of Mosin stacked up like cordwood says that I simply must have one since I'm of Finnish ancestry. I asked him if that means I have to get rid of my Hakim because I'm not Egyptian.

There's no accounting for taste. I have three SMLEs I like and find them to be just as butt ugly and cheaply made as Mosins. My Schmidt Rubins are ugly enough to make an oncoming train turn down a dirt road, but I find they have a special "inner beauty" when you get to know them.  :)

Guppy Belly Rifles, more than one type.
« Reply #6 on: July 16, 2012, 09:50:13 AM »
My 2 most accurate rifles initally cost me less than $10

I had to put some money in both to get them to fire and in the end they are almost neck to neck accuracy wise.

Free Savage 110 30-06 I'd got out a trash heap cause the owner pitched it because the sling broke on a snowmobile hunting trip and she cartwheeld down the snowmobile trail busting the stock and scope I fixed her up for $64 she can shredd a Pop can at 96 paces.

My $10 barreld action (no bolt) was a Mosin P-27 with a vary dark bore, in the end as a winter time cheapy cheapy project I was going to fire it when finished, it turned out surpriseingly well, In end I had to put out about $180 to get the thing to fire.
she can shredd a heet bottle at 109 paces using WOLF 204gr hunting ammo.
(ATI stock/scope/mounts/bolt) I spent under $200, the average .22 sells for about that price and up.
I had several Mosins through the years but this one shoots the best has the best feel and a really nice trigger pull, She's still around after I Stalin purged the closets, I'd cleaned house on most the Milsurps (they reproduce like rabbits in closets) Just got a Spanish 1916 in 7.62NATO to go with my MAS 49/56 also in 7.62.
I still have that Mosin, A 1891 Arg 7.65 Mauser, and a 1891 Carcano sporter in 7.62x39

Cheep, I bought one hex just to say I have one before they go up. Would really like to find one made by Remington before they go through the roof.

Another good place for Savage rifles...  at the world championships...and winning of course.  Imagine that a stock-off-the-shelf, comparatively lower priced rifle..embarrassing many of the world's more expensive rifles..
http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/archive/index.php/t-234615.html  And that's several years in a row..

  This from Calguns.net:
  "
The Savage Shooters used the Model 12 F-T/R from Savage Arms. This exact model can be purchased from any Savage Arms dealer and carries a suggested retail price of just $1,265. The results speak for themselves: Team Savage comes home with Seven gold medals, two silvers and two bronze from the World Championships. They also earned two gold medals and a bronze a the associated side matches, including one held in Ireland".

My buddy recently got a Savage Mod 10 PC in 308. I thought it looked kind of crummy. He already has a 700 LTR that looks and shoots great, so I wondered why he bothered with the Savage.

Long story short, after a few sub-MOA groups with it, I'll be buying a 10 PC soon. Probably the most accurate stock rifle in its class I've ever handled, regardless of price.

  Victor;

I wasn't always a Savage user but I cannot deny what I have seen, so I have bought more Savages than anything else in recent years.
Here is a discussion by some folks experienced in Savage shooting, and how they came to find out first hand, of the Savage "edge".

Yup, and that thread (2005) was before the AccuStock.

I've examined both my bud's HS Precision stock on his LTR and the 10 PC's with the action out of them and the Savage bedding is a superior design IMO. I still think a tuned 700 trigger is better than the stock AccuTrigger though...

I apologize for setting off the Savage pissing match (I think GBO has a Savage forum for savage discussions), It was not my intention to start that, I just wanted to show that a cheappie mosin rack grade service rifle can dish out some respectable groups.

Mosin triggers.
My trigger is stock (unmolested)and works the best of any Ive tried since I started messing with Mosins back in 1989, in end I'd suggest try swapping in 2 -3 diffrent Trigger Spring & Bolt Stop's this can really make a diffrence on Mosin trigger pull.

Id had 9 diffrent Mosins, in end the trigger helps allot, still its accuracy of the rifle that helps endear the rifle, My chamber sticks some yet due to steel ammo case coating's fouling my chamber, its a booger at times to pop the bolt open when its been shot some, I need to get a good chamber cleaning brush instead of the 410 ga shotgun brush Im useing now.
I have some 1970's era Chinese 148gr surplus ammo (bought 1992) that is brass case and is a dream to cycle through the P-27, it just is not that accurate, the black tip Czech 174 Milsurp is better but the Wolf 200gr soft point shoots the best.

If your cartridge interrupter is inletted good and not bent outta shape or gummed up with cosmoline, those rimmed russian rounds never have given me a hint of trouble feeding, if your encountering rim lock in a Mosin its because the cartridge interrupter is outta wack.

Show me another $90 rifle that will shoot as well as a Mosin and have history value as well.  It's the only one left...

What is the actual bore on the Mosin ?  Can it be easily reloaded with big game bullets, and if someday one wants..can it be rebored to a more standard caliber..30/06  or .308 for instance ?

Well that is the down side, most or at least mine needs a .312" bullet which don't give you many choices. I shoot the 174gr Hornady Interlock which shoots great and is a more than adequate hunting bullet.  I'm sure people have played with different conversions of it. But now you are putting money into a $90 gun....

Ironglow:  some Mosin bores run .311, some run to .312.  Both Hornady and Sierra make bullets for that bore diameter.  You can obtain bullets in 123-5 gn weight, 150 gn, 174 gn, 180 gn, and 205 gn. weight.  The most .311 diameter 123-125 gn slugs today are used for the 7.62x39 but the British 303 used them as a varmit bullet long years before the 7.62x39 round was developed.  Depending on how tight your bore is, either the .311 or .312 bullets should shoot well.
It is interesting that some folk have asked about bullet weight variety for that cartridge/bore but when you look at the .308 bore offerings the most popular seem to be a 125 gn varmit bullet, the standard 150 gn mil-spec fmj or soft nose, and the 180 gn; you get the same weight offerings in .311 - .312.
I would easily call a 174 gn .312 slug or a 180 gn .311 slug a big game bullet.  They have always worked for me out of one of my 303 Brits.  I would neither rebarrel or rechamber a Mosin, I would just shoot it.  Excellent ammo is available from Sellier and Bellot, PRVI, Wolfe, and a few others.

There are things you would do with an ugly Mosin that you'd never try with a beautiful Krag. ;)

I dont care for the look of the Mosin either. After shooting one I was hooked on the 7.62x54 round. These can be really good shooting rifles if you take the time to work out the trigger. I did something that a lot of Mil-Surp guys frown upon and "bubba jobed" my mosin to fit me. Now I am very happy with the way it looks and by doing all the work myself it still kept things cheaper than buying a new rilfe.

I actually like the looks of the mosin, but really like what you did with yours... I think I might get another and Bubba it up.  What kind of groups are you getting with the scoped Mosin? Did you cut the barrel down? And are you reloading for it?
