Browning Hi-Power Mk1
« on: July 15, 2012, 11:39:17 AM »
I have this oldie and the previous owner had Bo-Mar sights installed. Works fine other than the front blade is hard to see and someone
painted it red. Can inserts be found?

I have an old HP myself. Mine is blued and has the original fixed sights. I painted the front sight "Day Glo" orange. It works ok for my use. She doesn't make it out of the safe often these days. Have you looked online for a fiber optic front? If you like bright, hard to beat the FO. Bet that would be cheaper than having a gunsmith modify the front sight for an insert. Nice pistol!

Savage,

I am thinking of going FO. What would you recommend?

HUMMMMM. I don't care for fiberopitics as much as some do, but, that is just me and that doesn't make you a bad person.
I like the inserts better and I think they can still be found, try Brownell's or a web search---or--just paint them in a color you prefer.

Haven't looked into sights for the HP, so can't make any sight recommendations for it. I'm a fan of Dawson sights, I'd look there first.

I like night sights on a home or carry gun. They are pretty much worthless otherwise. For range use, I like a black serrated rear sight and front post. My Dawson front sight on my action pistol gun is .115 wide with a very small fiber optic. I find the large dia FOs to be distracting for precision shots.

I don't care for optic sights on anything other than a shotgun on a skeet range. Bomar or such sound like what you need .

I had one like that once; picked it up fairly inexpensively too.  I couldn't stand the Bomar rib and sights so I took it to a gunsmith and had him 'fix-it', used it for a bunch and traded up on a newer one.

What did he do? I am seriously thinking of removing the Bomar and having regular sights installed.
